Title: Geno’s New Lii W-15’s
Post by Geno on 10/21/20 at 19:42:25

I just added the Lii W-15 bass drivers to the line up. Matched with the Crystal 10’s.

Really good so far. The Crystal’s are well broken in, but the bass drivers only have a few hours on them, so we will see.

Awesome setup with the open baffles & subwoofer Geno. That's putting on your thinking cap.

Thanks guys. This came about because I just don’t have the room for two baffles on each side, side by side. This gave me better use of my space. I am happy with cosmetics too, though.

Hi Geno,

Very cool .....

How are you powering the W-15 drivers ?

Happy listening,
Randy

Hey Randy.

Thanks. Im using a Crown stereo sub amp. Unfortunately, so far, they are too over powering. In my room, I guess they are too close to the corners and are very boomy. For now I’ve gone back to the dual 12’s. I’ll try more room treatments in the corners to try and tame it. If that doesn’t work, I may have to try DSP of some sort.

I noticed that you are using one in the middle in the he-shed. My present room arrangement doesn’t allow that placement, but that might work best in my room too.

Very best,

Geno

Hi Geno,

I tried corner placement and experienced the same thing that you are.
Way too much bass ..... the room is overloading.

The center placement worked out much better.
Something else I noticed (which is also true of every other bass baffle or powered subwoofer setup I have used) is the best setting ended up being to dial the crossover and gain of the subwoofer amp to where it sounded "good" and then backed the gain off a little.

In most cases (in my experience), when the bass system is drawing attention to itself, it's too much and not a good sound.
I enjoy a "foundation" ..... not a nosebleed .....

There are some recordings that are exceptions .....
I recently found a recording by Brian Bromberg and there is a track on it that blows my mind every time I play it ..... "My Bass".
It seems that no matter how much gain I have on the plate amp, it still sounds incredible .....

Hang in there and keep tweaking it .... you will get there .....

Best wishes,
Randy

Randy,

Thanks for the encouraging words. I have a few ideas about how to get the bass under control.

I appreciate the tip on Brian Bromberg. I’ll check it out :)

Best,

Geno

Problem solved. I switched the driver arrangement, and put the bass drivers on the inside to get them out of the corners. The Crystals are closer to the corners now, but it sounds pretty darn good.

Congratulations.  Those look really really cool.  I have built the W15s and the Crystal 10s into the same baffle and am extremely happy with the results.  Using the Crown to power the W15s works very well.

Do you have the Crown Crossover set to  the W15s at a specific frequency?    I found 180 to be a good crossover point but have not played around with it too much.

Wow, I love it!

Is that a little shelf unit for your tubes!?

Ellsworth, I’ve done a good bit of experimenting with the crossover/volume settings on the Crown. I have landed on 212 Hz with the volume at 60%. I’m using the CSP3 and SE84UFO, and with the tube combo I have in, this seems to work well.

Canonken, yes - homemade tube storage for 6922 tube size types in the middle with the light. Also, storage for 5U4G tube size types on bottom right.

I really like how you "Engineered" your way around your problem.

The only thing I see wrong is that beast on the wall has shed it's horns on your table. If I were you I would shoo it away from your wall.

Donnie, yes he is always sticking his nose in where it doesn’t belong. I think the music has caused him to lose his head...

Geno,  Thanks for the note.  I should play around with my crossover more but it sounds like we have it set in a pretty similar manner. The Crown is a really nice and easy way to bi-amp the W-15s

Geno, your room is looking great! Sometimes the simplest  tweak can bring hugh benifits.  ;)
