What is this 'magic cable' recipe you mention?

I tried a search and it brought nothing more than your post and one more older.

Hi DD!

The ‘magic cable’ is a single wire (I used 16 awg) with a resistor soldered in-line to the positive pin on an RCA plug (plugged into each input on a subwoofer amp (ex. Crown XLS 1002) and the other ends connected to each main amp positive speaker terminal.

The resistor is an Ohmite 600 ohm, 1W, 1%. Got them on eBay.

Best,

Geno

On one of the other threads Steve and one of his clients spoke about removing certain fail safe components like fuses from the circuit and hard soldering interconnects acknowledging improved results but cautioning the risks. I may be mistaken but I believe he said the risk was real but was less likely because of the overbuilt transformer.

Thanks, Geno,

I suppose I read more into your use of the word "recipe" than I should have. I thought you guys were cooking something up!

So you leave yours floating, I have had to ground mine, usually. Not so with the Yamahas or the Crowns, but the McIntosh appreciates it.

Thanks again for clearing the kitchen.

I’m using a Crown XLS1002 into a single W15. Should I bridge it to mono and use one of the coil taps or run a cable from each channel into each of the voice coils? Is there any danger to the amp or speaker doing one way over the other?

Hello guys,

As I am waiting for my 300b this is my first post.

I am very curious about the W15 if it could be used for a kind of pureaudioproject duet 15 build crossing over to a large horn arround 600hz or so.

My question is if anyone has measured the W15s 1w at 1m in series or parallel.

I would like to know what kind of output this driver gives when driven in a build like this.

Thanks so much and very happy to be in a audioforum of this level of quality-posting Wink

Cheers
Wigand

Welcome, Wigand. If you haven’t seen this, check it out: www.modelpromo.nl/audio-dandy/reviews/The%20Liiondias%20Open%20Baffle%20Speaker/...

I have built several versions. While I have not measured the W-15’s myself they are listed as 91.3 or 95.6 db depending on whether you use one or both voice coils. I found the lower efficiency a better way to tame the hum from the 300b but the W-15’s are not as authoritative in this combination with the few watts the 300b puts out. It depends on your music preferences really. If you like big bass the W-15’s really shine crossed over lower and driven by a separate amp. But if you primarily listen to music without much information in the lower frequencies the W-15’s will help dampen the hum from the amp.

I personally couldn’t listen to the crossover after living with only single range drivers for so long. Once I added the crossover it sounded like I had wet blankets over my speakers.

If you end up giving it a try and build your own crossovers send me a PM, I have all the parts and would give you a steal of a deal on them.
