Very Warm Transformer (Read 4988 times)

BobOH1 Verified Member Offline Posts: 11	Very Warm Transformer 07/23/20 at 01:21:08 After playing my Rachael amp for a half hour, the transformer becomes very warm and only gets hotter as time goes on. Not enough to burn your hand but much warmer then any other transformer I have felt before. Is this normal? If the volume is turned up does the transformer become hotter as more current goes through the amp? Thanks.

My ZMA output transformers get hot but never more than allowing me to keep my hand on them for a few seconds. The spec temperature is much higher than this. I don't think playing music raises the temperature much over just idle.

The SE34I.5 draws around 90 milliamps no matter what the volume setting. The transformer is rated at 170 milliamps at 170 degrees. So current is not actually a factor in the transformers temperature, it is more infrared heat from the rectifier tube washing the transformer that heats it up.

If you can hold you hand on it for 10 seconds, that is about 110 degrees. 130 degrees is normal, so you are well within the safe zone.
