My (reasonably priced) Torii Jr. Tube Thread

Going to start a thread to track my tube rolling on my Torii Jr. I am limiting my permutations just to stay sane in the process.

The objective is to stay below $50 / tube if possible.

Power Tubes: EL34 / KT66
Regulation: 0A3
Rectification: 5U4 / 5AR4 (GZ34)

  • Voshod 6N1P-EV Gold Grid - $22
  • (Steve) 6N5P - $16

# Power Tubes

  • Gold Lion KT66 (New Production) - $40
  • Tung-Sol KT66 (New Production) - $35
  • Tung-Sol EL34 (New Production) - $25
  • Mullard EL34 (New Production) - $25

# Rectifier

  • Mullard GZ34 (New Production) - $35
  • Gold Lion GZ34 (New Production) - $40
  • Winged =C= SED 5U4-G / 5U3C (NOS) - $50
  • 5U4G blackplate RCA, ST shape (NOS) - $59

I am going to stick with 5U4 rectifiers, Steve is the mastermind behind this and they are selected for a reason.

Well, if you run across a Sophia Electric Aqua 274B (I know it's out of your stated price range) don't hesitate to try it--it's similar to a 5U4 and it sounds sublime in all the components I've tried it in (CSP2+, CSP3-25, SE84UFO3-25 Monoblocks, Torii Mk II, Torii Mk III, Taboo Mk III, Taboo Mk IV).

And it's worth stepping out of the 5U4 field (and I think Steve would agree as he uses these in many amps) to try a Type 80 rectifier with adaptor, especially the globe type. Very interesting rectification that sounds wonderful in the components I list above.

Well, I grabbed a few options from eBay, we'll see how this goes.

Waiting on the following to arrive:

NOS JAN 5U4GB - $25
NOS Winged =C= 5U4C - $24
NOS Sylvania 5931 (5U4WG) - $16

As far as input tubes, I found a pair of Made in Japan Matsushita (Mullard) 7DJ8 tubes for $13 each. They sound absolutely incredible. Sleeper tube.

Looking forward to compare to the 6N5P tubes coming from Steve.

How did the mullard el34 and gold lion kt77 compare to the Tung sol el34? I have the Tung sol’s in mine now and was considering the mullards or switching to kt77 with the gold lions. Any impressions would be appreciated!
