Actually it may even work better then having it before the pre, I mean if you put it prior to the pre your taking your signal and giving it a tube signature and then into the pre which might subtract from that signature.

Anyway, since the Z-BOX is less than unity gain, you shouldn't have to worry about overdriving anything and it would be interesting to see how it performs differently between the two layouts.
