My trusty Tascam cd-160 MKII (modified) no longer reads discs.  Examined internal... No dirt on lens and everything appears to be mechanically functional.
Any ideas?

As a guess I would say the laser died. I had something like this happen to my Sony player. It would start to skip and then would not see the disk. See if you can find a replacement laser assembly for it. I replaced the one on my Sony and has been running for the last 8 years.

Yes. The laser has packed up. The replacement is pretty cheap. I have had the same problem......twice !!!!!
