Steve: help with 6CA7 info

Steve, does the JJ 6CA7 act as a tetrode or pentode? Is the Hazen Grid Mod acting as an improvement with this tube?

Several of us have been trying the new EH 6CA7 tubes. Do you know if these take advantage of the Hazen Grid Mod?

Thanks in advance!

A TRUE 6CA7 is a pentode. The EH 6CA7 is a tetrode, so the Hazen mod will not have any effect. The JJ 6CA7 is a true pentode like most other EL34's

Thanks. I actually think from reading up on it that it's the opposite, the true 6CA7 is a beam tetrode, some are made as pentodes.

Either way, to be honest, the EH sounds pretty good whether they work the Mod or not. Thanks for the help!

I agree. I put the EH's back in the Torii and true to the first time I had them in there I like them the best of all the EL34/6CA7 varieties that I have now tried. I really like the JJ's, thought the "Mullards" were pretty good, and wasn't crazy about the Black Treasures(although I think I had at least one that was defective). I'm going to leave them alone now and the only tube I may still play with is my inputs, where I'm currently using an Amperex 70's green globe 7308's that sound fabulous.

RCA tube manual calls 6CA7/EL34 a power pentode.

I think the CCE mod works for Pentode and the JJ and Shuguang Treasure are Pentode. The Psvane T series at Grant audio are listed as an upgrade of the Treasures, so are presumably pentode. The EH is "The Electo Harmonix 6CA7 is a tough big bottle tetrode design". From EH write up, and apparently works in the Torii but presumably not using the CCE mod. I could not find anything, pentode or not, at Grant (or anywhere else except that Tubeampdoctor lists the Psvane under power pentodes). An email to Grant Fidelity would likely yield a definitive answer.
