6n6p tube
11/09/10 at 01:12:07

How about a 6n6p instead of a 6n1p?  I have tried some buccaneer tube swapping before...but a 6n6p-ev in place of a 6n1p...HELP!  Am I mad...or might I be on to something?  I have rolled a 6n2p into my sv-84-select amp and am convinced that it provides greater depth and gain than even the mighty good sounding 6n1p.  Don't ask me about specs; I know nothing of output, voltages and such...my ears are convinced.  All thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I'm also very interested in this tube.  So far I like the 6N1P best, but I have not tried that many and am more in the collecting a list stage.
This is what I have so far, listed with their amplification factor, u (mu):
6N1p u=33
6DJ8 u = 33
6922 u = 33
ECC88 / E88CC u = 33
6CG7 u = 20
6FQ7 u = 20
6N6P / ECC99 / E182CC u = 22 +/-4
6N6PI u = 20 +/-4
6BQ7A/6BZ7/6BS8 u = 36
7308/E188CC u = 33

6N2P u = 100 +10/-15

I would guess that the 6N2P would not be very compatible due to its high gain, but who knows - that could just mean you have to turn the volume down (and it would be good with an i-pod).

If anyone has any tubes to add to the list (with your impressions if you've tried them) please do so.

Dan

Thanks, Dan

I have had the 6n2p-ev running in my amp for over a year and have experienced no ill effects.  The gain seems increased, but not dramatically so.  It is more of an incremental improvement over the 6n1p.

I have tried the 6CG7/6FQ7 and found it to put me to sleep. There is just not enough gain and dynamics to suit me. The 6n6p has the same gain factor as those.

On the other hand, I tried 6BQ7/6BZ7 and it compares to a 6DJ8, light with less bass then a 6922 or 7308.

It seems like a 6n2p is too high gain.

Interesting observation, Riviera.

It isn't clear from your thread...have you actually tried 6n6p and 6n2p, or just the equivalents you listed?

Also, are you using these as input tubes (like I am) or as a line stage?  I have read that the 6n6p and expensive 6n30p "super tube" excel in the latter application.

You might also look at the 6N23P.  I replaced the 6N1P that came with my Torii III with the 6N23P and have never looked back.  It is a direct replacement for the 6N1P

I have not used the 6n6p or 6n2p. I based my opinion on the 6n6p equivalent in gain, the 6CG7, which I found anemic and not satisfying.

My gear was the MLB headphone amp and the CSP2. I used 3 6CG7's in the MLB and did not like them.

I used 3 6BZ7's in my CSP2 and they were good.

Now the 6N23P is the same as the Electro Harmonix 6922, a really good tube. I have tried these, too.

My interests in this tube is an input stage on a hybrid power amp, so its the only tube (one per channel).  The input is at a "line in" level.

Datman,

I agree that the 6N23P-EV is a GREAT tube...later, I discovered the 6N1P-EV.  After that it was the 6N2P-EV that seized my attention.  My whole reason for the thread was whether the 6N6P had anything new to offer...from what I have read, there are more opinions out there than tubes.

For the sake of this quasi-science, I ordered some 6N6Ps today and will report back with my subjective impressions.  That is, if I don't blow anything up.

I'm very curious about this tube but I didn't want to create another thread for it.

Does anyone know if the current SE84UFO2 can use this input tube (6n6p) without modification? Will there be any issues to the amp if I try it out?

It seems one of the designers of the Lampizator dac is really high on this tube. Since the gain is so low as previously discussed I'm wondering if it matches better with certain rectifiers ( assuming this input does work on the current Zen).
