subwoofer with Mini Torii
08/26/10 at 13:57:35

i have my Omega deep hemp subwoofer connected to the preamp-out on the Mini torii  but as soon as i try to increase the volume it immediately clips or overloads the sub. Is there a solution to this or another way to hook up the sub?

Doesn't the sub have a gain control that can be turned down?

Yes .  volume all the way down to start. can barely turn knob before sub starts to overload. Had previously turned it up to 10 to 11 oclock. Now can barely nudge it before bass gets very boomy.
Was wondering if there would be another way tpo connect

Have you tried connecting  your sub to the speaker terminals?

No. Afraid to do it that way. I am not electically inclined and always afraid of blowing up the amp or damaging the speakers

Yes  Its very safe.  I've seen people wire subs using the speaker level input several wrong ways, and no one to date has ever hurt a thing.

What Zigi said. I've run my sub from the outputs of my CS for years.
Give it a try---

Yes, I encountered same problem when first connecting my HSU sub to the pre outs of the mini torii,  like tooo much gain.   Then I made 2 pair of very cheap 18 gauge solid core magnet wire and just ran them off the torii's posts into the imputs on back of sub. The bass signal instantly tightend  up and all knobs had nice  useable range again. I use a sub to help out my hornshoppe speakers lower range.  Mark

since i havnt had any luck with various connections and cant figure out why the sub will not work connected directly tot eh speaker inputs of the Torii , i connected a separate amp to the pre amp out on the Torii and ran the speaker wire from the amp to the sub and it works beautifully. Would rather not have the extra equipment in the mix but cant figure out why it dosnt work directly from the Torii speaker inputs.

"Torii speaker inputs"?
You must mean outputs?

Try this:  Connect just one high level output from the mini-torii to one of the high level inputs of the sub.  Does it work?  If so, verify that the other mini-torii output and other sub input also work when just that one channel is connected, then connect both channels, but reverse the polarity of everything (so you have the red mini-torii outputs connected to the black sub inputs and the black mini-torii outputs connected to the red sub inputs).

Also be aware of this:

Quote:
The Mini Torii has the color codes of the output speaker jacks reversed.  Red is actually negative and black is actually positive.  This was done to maintain the desired absolute phase.

If you have a plate amp like mine (common ground?), it does.

Luckily mine has a phase switch.

I had to connect the the opposite terminals on the sub, then flip the phase switch. Volume got louder on the sub, and bass was much more coherent.

trying once again to go back to my sub.  when everyone says to reverse the inputs do they mean you mean the speaker teminals to the sub ? or the rca inputs from the pre out.

Swap the connections to the speaker terminals.
So; red to black and black to red.

I had the same issue with a Torii Mk III driving Omega Super 6 Alnicos, first using one DeepHemp Sub, then using two DeepHemp Subs (each sub bridged to mono using jumpers).

After a phone call to Steve, I reversed the loudspeaker cables at the speaker outputs or at the subs' high-level inputs and this resolved the problem (and restored my sanity). Reversing the phase on the subs, as recommended by another user, is optional, in my experience.

I am expecting delivery of a Mini Torii in the coming weeks and it's good to know what to expect. This is a good post, and I'm glad that I chanced upon it.

pann56:

Speaker cables to the main speakers should be wired correctly--red with red, black with black. Reverse only the cables to the sub(s), either at the amplifier end or on the sub side.

The DeepHemps are wonderful subs.

Happy listening!

Well, I will add on my experiences with a subwoofer powered by a SS mono amp and a powered crossover. The Mini Torii works well in my system if I do not use 12AT7 or other tubes with higher Mu.  My sub works well with 12AU7 or a 5814 varient, but 12ATs overload the sub using cabling from Mini Torii speaker outputs to the crossover to the sub.  By the way, I have dialed in 50s 5814 CBS Hytrons with the sub and Tung Sol 6x4s for a nice balanced sound.

I am in the same boat. I am building the exodus anrachy 6.5" tapped horn sub and will use the MCM plate amp, which has a variable phase control.

The line level impedance of the plate amp is reportedly 10K ohms and the mini's manual says the preamp is 1 volt (right?) at max usable volume.

So is there an issue with just running preamp outputs into the sub?
I was also wondering if a line level attenuator would be necessary. But I have not assembled everything yet so I do not yet know.

**Update**
The preamp outputs on the mini are perfect for the input impedance on the MCM plate amp. I set the gain @ 12:00, which seems perfect. I am still experimenting with the variable phase control and sub placement but so far I like it at 90*. Running the mains full range vs. sub/sat is my first choice given that I was merely looking to augment lower octaves without changing overall sound. But I wonder what gains/losses would there be if I ran speaker level to sub's x-over. Is there any perciptable signal degradation to mids and highs when using speaker level inputs and outputs?
