Decware Half Wedge box Pics!

Here are some Pics of the wedge box build in the process.

I will be building two boxes for my home theater. Using ¾” MDF than I will wrap it with ½” birch my plain is to stain or paint it a glossy black finish.

Any news on the performance? I got mine mock-up and playing but ran into port fart around 110db. I was not even close to max output before the problems started. I have since disassembled and have shorten the ports and will try the next round of test. Let me know how yours turns out, I am really interested to see how those monster subs do in this type enclosure.

Before the total assembly of the sub plate was screwed in completely, I tested only one Subwoofer. Played the movie Transformers 2 to see how it sounded.

Using this Audiopulse with 1000 watts (amp about 1/2 way) in a small ported box I was impressed with the outcome! I figured with this kind of woofer that the box, it would be too small using 2.65 CF ported.

With only One woofer being tested I had it playing downstairs and it was shaking everything upstairs windows rattling and all.

I am not sure what kind of db I am hitting due to not having a meter. But I know that when I go into another room downstairs you can just hear that low low bass travel. Like when a car bass-in drives past you and you can hear it. I know the performance will sound much better when the boxes are complete and if I fill it with Polyfill or acoustic foam.

It’s coming along. I have been going a lot of sanding and pre drilling for the screws, which is what, is taking most of my time. Plain is to:

1.      Sand the front of the box with the port it’s somewhat not flush.
2.      Paint the inside of the wedge using a glossy black finish or use textured paint. ( try a different look)
3.      Cut the ¾” Oak down to size, wrap the box, screw and stain.
4.      Complete the same steps with the second box.

I have added some more Pics.

Nice build you have going on. If I could make a humble suggestion, I would prolly double the sides to help support the sub baffle. Right where you have the screws holding the sub baffle, I would put another piece of 3/4". I would prolly put a piece of 3/4" in the back too just to reinforce the whole thing. Don't get me wrong , you have excellent wood working skills but the kind of pressures these areas are going too see will be in the 130db to 140db. Here is one of your pics where I think it be a good idea to reinforce.

Ok, thanks for the suggestion. I want to make sure I understand you are talking about the left/right sides were there the 5 screws are or the bottom pic? Those two pics were not complete at that time.

I was pondering whether or not to do the whole length when I was building it. I thought to be ok since the baffle is 1 1/2 “   and I put screws every 2” apart.

In this pic bellow notice the top screws that screws into the bottom baffle every 2” all around the box and the top wood is screwed from the inside to the bottom. I have used over 103 screws just on the outside of the box, glue and liquid nail. Sometimes I get carried away. LOL

Hope I didn’t confuse you!

This is the only I can explain with confusing myself. The pic is with the sub baffle not install. I just put an extra piece to help reinforce the sides and baffle. Your baffle will prolly not flex but I got a feeling the sides will not fair as well only being 3/4" thick.

With baffle and front installed.

I even double up the back wall.

I know when I added the extra piece on top I had to brace it because it was shaking my change off the top of it and I don't have half the sub you've got.

I must say you are doing an excellent job on the build. I like your suggestion to use a brace in the center of the wedge. Brilliant! I never thought of that.
I am a little confused if you are on the same page as I am with my enclosure.

All of my wood will be 1.5” thick when I add the oak when completed, expect for the one piece used for the port and the 4 brace’s inside of the box.  The top of the box will also be 1.5” thick.

The wedge were the left and right sides of the box will be are going to be 2 ¼ “thick.

I just want to make sure when you suggested that I should brace an area earlier or do you think I will be ok?

You'll be fine if you end up with 1.5" thickness. I was not paying attention when you mention the oak install, my bad. Looks like you are on the right path to a devastating build. Keep up the good work, you will be booming in no time.

I have added some Pics with the oak wood.

The next step is to will be to stain and paint the inside of the box.

I will also be making a grill to cover the port and the sub opening,

Enjoy!!

I wanted to ask if I should use Acoustic foam inside the box?  I am looking @ the 1” Pyramid kind.

I have used it in subwoofer box inside the car. When I installed it I tried it without the foam and then with. I could tell the difference in sound, but I was not sure if I should get it since the box is in a bigger area of space and it could be harder to tell.

I didn’t account for using it and if I put 1” in the box I was not sure if I will lose my C.F?  I would like to order it now if its need since I am getting close to completing the first box.

The status with the box.

I have stained and put one coat of polyurethane on will be butting on 2 more coats of polyurethane.

The first coat of black paint is on as well.

I should have some Pics in a week if all goes well.

If you think it sounds better with the foam then use it. I only use polyfill for subwoofer enclosures but have seen many others use the foam for certain sub builds. As for the CF I would not worry because the difference will not will not be enough to change the tuning IMO. Glad to here your project is moving foward and good luck with the rest of your build.
