Complexity of HDT Construction?
07/06/09 at 00:02:52

New here, and it seems I found my way too late. I found the site through research on speaker plans. I built speakers ages ago, and I thought it would be fun to do so again. I found the Frugal-Horn sites and Planet 10 Hi-Fi, found myself reading about a lot of interesting horn designs, eventually finding my way to a forum in which several spoke glowingly of Steve's work on Fostex drivers, and then finding the old site with the kits for the HDT speakers. Aha! Nirvana, I thought. Only to discover that the up-to-date website apparently no longer sells the kits but does sell the plans and hardware. Thus leading to my question: has anyone here built a set of HDTs from plan? Any assessment of complexity and tools required? My woodworking skills are so-so, and I have a decent workbench of tools, and I am patient. Thanks in advance!

Perhaps I was wrong and still can purchase the kits? Heck, I'll figure this out at some point.

Good suggestion Lin; I appreciate it. That was the link I found, and it made me realize I am just chasing my tail too much.  ;)

On an interesting note, I came across another poster's sale of his HDT kit, because he had come to the conclusion that the ERR was more for him. I may well be headed down that path as well.

I have built the HDTs and did not find them to be very difficult. It took me about 10 hours total. I have a complete woodworking/panel shop however. I used quilted makore for the finish on Aquatec MarinePly boxes. I live in Hawaii and particle board does not work here. The marine ply with its epoxy glued veneer plies was a great choice for me but MDF should work well in other than tropical climes and easy to glue also. There is a step by step build archive on the Decware site with awesome pictures if you are interested.
                                                                                         https://www.decware.com/cgi-bin/yabb22/YaBB.pl?num=1193802286

The box build is simpler than the old fashioned mitered boxes and only requires a good dado and some measuring tools. The transmission line might cause some head scratching but the link above should take the mystery out of it. This build also took the process to its ultimate. Don't be concerned as you could do it much simpler and still have awesome speakers.       mike

Mike:

Thanks much. As it turns out, it looks like I will be heading down the path of both the HDTs [for my office], and the ERRs for my home.

I've built them.  They are not difficult at all.    A good table saw and a router for cutting circles is about all you need.

The plans are very well layed out and they are a very decent speaker.
