When is a 12" a 12" ?

Slightly different topic,  I bought a pair of
Sony Xplod  XSL120P5 for my (greatly) modified HWK.
These are car subs and are described as 12" woofers, yet the Sony
spec graph describes them as 255mm woofers, the extra 2" being the
speaker surround i.e. 300mm.
I'm not complaining, as I new what I was buying, good price too, I figured.
$98 AU for two of them (about $80 USA).
However, a similar argument can be put forward for Amplifier specs, you know,
the NoName brand with 1100 Watts on tap etc.

When is a 12" speaker not a 12" speaker?

Oh, and the HWK, I'll post some stuff soon. And Decware, as they are the
inspiration, I'll buy the plans soon too, even though I probably won't be
using them in the near future. The Imperials I built for Jake will be coming home
this week, I'll be baby sitting them for a while - poor me. Tongue

The HWK mod will be for my home surround system. I've bought the Blade Runner
5 disc collectors edition, and I refuse to play 'The Final Cut' until I have my
(as yet, not set up) surround system complete.  :) Wink Grin Cool

Cheers

Gazman.

Hey,
The 255mm is the effective cone diameter or piston diameter. The total diameter of the driver is how we talk about them. Your sony 12s should measure around the 300mm mark from the edges of the basket mounting. Hope this helps.
On another note, i have a hwk15 i built a few years ago loaded with 2 really cheap 12s and it really cranks out some low bass! You should be pretty happy, especially for home theatre. Hope you have plenty of power to drive it cause i found 300rms not quite enough!
Cheers, Benn

Howdy Benn, I guess the basket diameter is near 12". Have finished my
megga modified HWK, I guess it is a fallacy to call it a HWK. However,
I have downloaded the plans, more a way of saying thanks to Steve
and the gang for providing the knowledge, and the forum for providing the
inspiration.

How does it sound? First impression - awesome  :)

Unfortunately, in my mad haste to get it built, I have no construction
pics, but I will upload some of the finished product. I think you will be
surprised.

Cheers
