I believe this is what you can use in a CS:
274B
5U4
5R4
5AR4
5U4G
5U4GB
GZ32
GZ34
GZ37
CV593?
5V4?

... and possibly the 5Y3 - but I never tried it. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Courtesy of Boead from a past forum:
Rectifier tubes for Zen Select:
(Low voltage = mellower, less aggressive)
-25v      5Y3
-15v      5R4, 5R4-G
0         Stock - 5U4-G
0         5U4-G, -GA, -GB [G=800ma-max, GA=900ma-max, GB=1000ma-max]
+5v       GZ32 (Mullards own, 5V4 substitute)
+10v      5V4
+10v      5V4-G
+10v      5V4-GA
+30v      5AR4 / (GZ34)
(Higher voltage = Dynamic, more aggressive)

I think Randy still has a Sophia 274B mesh-plate but I think the thread that discussed it is gone  :(

yes i was just looking at that thread awhile back. it looks like the 274b wont work in a "c" or so someone stated. i still dont know about the 5y3 in a "CS" but either way its not that big a deal. I dont have a "c" anymore so thats of little matter to me. just wondering as i didnt remember those combinations being mentioned before.

I just ordered a pair of the valve art 274b tubes for my new Select-EX, I deffinaltly prefer the nos rca tubes that grant gave me along with the ruby. I wanted to try one of the jan centron tubes as well but tubeman is out of stock. ill have to wait on those. does anyone know a decent place to get a mullard GZ32 without selling a car or house?

Hello Slappomat,

I'm going by memory as I haven't looked at the scematic in a while, but I believe if you go to the 5y3 you need to change the cathode bias resistor on the SV83 from 100 ohms to 150 ohms.

https://www.decware.com/Select/select_ownersmanual.pdf

I just remembered. Go to page 11.

Yep ..... I have both, actually 3 ..... an early production Valve Art, a Sophia solid plate and a Sophia mesh plate.

According to the spec sheet for a 274B, a Zen Select has too much capacitance to make this rectifier happy.  It likes to see a lot less than the 40uf in the Select.  Even so, there are quite a few Select owners that have used a 274B with absolutely no problems ..... myself included.  It has been stated that the tube life might be shortened in a Select.

As to a Zen C, I don't remember reading anything about how well (or not) this would work ..... ???

The thread that originally discussed this was Rectifier tube insanity .....

I read a review of the full music 274b and the designer said that the tube likes to see a first cap value of 10uf or less. the reviewer said his amp ( a handmade 2a3 amp) said he changed this 20uf cap for a 6.8uf cap.

would that be ok to change in the select? and has anyone tried changing it?

Its taken me a day to figure out what exactly I'm hearing different.

They give a more pronounced leading edge to sounds, and so they make the amp time much better.  It also sounds slightly more agressive.

Its fast without sounding dry.
