WO32 Sounds terrible?  WHY?
12/31/05 at 14:34:54

I just built a wo32 and was quite excited about it because of all the hype on this forum about it.  I am not going to lie mine sounds terrible!!!   What can I do to make it sound better?  The speakrs are wired right.   I am using some JBL 10 that I had kicking around not a high quality speaker but they sounded better in a closed box then in my wo32.  The box sounds very hollow and doesn't go very low.  Any suggestions on how to fix this.

Hi,

sorry to hear that your wo32 doesn't cut it (yet).

Can you give any specs of the JBL driver you are using?

Does it have parameters close to the driver Steve recommends?
As far as I understand it, the wo32 is more picky regarding driver
selection than the normal WO.

Some other wild guesses from me:
- closed chamber too small for driver -> loosely fill chambers with dampening material, then check again
- crossover frequency set too high on amp -> adjust crossover freq lower or use different amp.

Bye + good luck,
 Hannes

The JBL's have a poly cone?

The box probably needs some dampening on the face that the cone fires into.  Try some heavy felt or 1/4" carpet.

Odd.
I just pieced a WO32 together with no Idea of the specs of the Drivers ( which were really old 6"ADS car subs)
The amp is rated at 100watts total and puts out maybe 75watts if the moon is in the right postion.
I was dissapointed at first which was no surprise, because I messed with the design. but a few thing changed.

The short time I got to listen to mine before I went to work. I made two adjustments.

One was the loose fill I put in the sealed chamber. The idea is that it does not need it and you likely don't if its happy with the subs and well built.

The other change was location, mine ended up between a wall and my sofa jammed in a corner facing down 4" off the floor.
I think I could find a better location but I am going to listen to it there for awhile before I move it again.

In a correct WO32 enclosure the volume of the subs should not exceed 1.5, or at least the subs match the chamber size while staying under 1.5.

as far as adding material to shrink the enclosure thats up to you

The QTS should be under .34.

To be honest  I only have the one hack and I have yet to build one the way it should be, but instead of disapointment it made me realize how much I want to build a (real one).

I built it for fill and it exceeds that for me. It has temporary duty as a sub for my little HT

Thanks for all the help,  I put some polyfill into the speaker chambers and it made a decent difference in sound quality.  It still doesn't sound any better then my single cheap 12 car sub that a friend gave me, even in the same place in the room.  I did find out that the specs for the speakers that I am using
Fs      - 29.5Hz
Qms   - 4.39
Qes    - 0.29
Qts    - 0.268

Thats a fer sure, my little toy is crossed at 50Hz on  a cheap plate amp and my ear tells me I am getting as high as 80Hz at a lower SPL if that makes sense.

of course it makes sense Gex.

Crossover don't stop sound, they just attentuate it according to a slope, the 12db per octave thing.  Meaning if you have a 6db per octave lowpass at 50 hz, one octave above 50 hz will still put out sound, just -6db of the normal amount.

Hey guys,  I just picked up some different speakers and fliped the box over on the carpet.  Could hardly believe how crappy those JBL LC 1050 were.  The box does shake my room nicely, and sounds awsome.   Another W032 Satisfied Box Builder

For carpet it is just a normal shag carpet around 3/8 to 1/2 length.   Those JBL's I believe they are the bottom of the bottom of the line speaker at Future Shop I payed $40 for both in a box (demo)

As for the angles I took and made a model of the entire box out on AutoCAD and calculated all my angles like that.  I did definatly take me longer then I expected to glue all the angles to the quality that I wanted.
