Starting a Corner Horn project
10/19/26 at 06:19:36

I always wanted Klipschorns. I thought Klipschorns were the ultimate. They seemed so holographic and fast and realistic. Now that I own a pair, I’m thinking that the staggered sound front and crossover Amp/LCR/Speaker interaction is fuzzing things up.

And so it begins… I’m working on a walnut burl wood veneered version of the Decware single driver corner horn. The non-veneered inner parts are getting sealed and assembled. The veneer shows up in a week or so.

I’m thinking these will sound even better than the Jensen Imperial my dad built when I was a youngster (when my folks were out I used to slip on a record and turn it up to blastisimo!). What a way to start you life-long listening reference!

(Photo was supposed to go here not allowed until my fourth post)

I admire your ambition, S2. A few years ago I had looked at the DIY pages, and decided that the open baffle speakers were about the limit of my woodworking abilities. I look forward to photos documenting your progress.

Thanks for the reply. I’m in slow-build mode because of all the subtle challenges in the design.build.  I’ll be posting pix when I hit the 4 post requirement. This is my first post here, but I now have a SE84UFO2.1 and a ZP3 with a VPI table and Denon DL103. I can’t wait to upgrade the speakers. I’m hoping to hear some this weekend.

Hey Sunny 2!
Very interested in your impressions once you get her done. Been to Steve's twice and never got a chance to auditioning his.

Well I’m thinking it’s a long shot that he would bring them to Decfest but I have my fingers crossed. At least I’ll be able to hear similar sounding ones on his electronics.

Awesome project, Sunny2. Keep the photos coming.

I think you’ll be pleased with both Steve’s design and the result of removing the crossover from your system.

Maybe he will see this giving some incentive to do just that!

Your work is looking good. Steve had a tough time forming the horn flair without using a bunch of putty for smoothing. Interesting to see how you tackle it.

JBZen. So far so good on the joinery, but I haven’t gotten to the final flare yet. I’m building a couple Bruce Edgar 300 Hz horns and they have a compound curve problem too…

I’m wondering if Steve has his bolted to the wall.

Been working on staining/varnishing the inner parts you won’t see so I’ll know what to do on the parts that will be visible when pulled out from the wall. The trick is to also get the Baltic birch plywood to look like walnut.  I want to make sure all the wood is coated to minimize moisture absorption and termites (?), and to seal the cabinet acoustically.
