Fiber vs ethernet
08/09/26 at 01:41:55

I did a search of the forum and couldn’t find any results so starting a new thread on this topic.

I’m going down the rabbit hole of connecting my internet connection via fiber instead of Ethernet. Has anyone else here gone this direction and if so what has your experience been?

MM- Can you provide more detail on what your beginning plan and outcome goal is?  Are you bringing fiber into the house or converting your router output from ethernet to fiber?  I have played around quite a bit on the later.

I sure have. I experienced a noticeable improvement in sound quality, specifically in the areas of a blacker background, more relaxed, and increased dynamics, among others.

First I came out from the router into an inexpensive TP Link MC200CM media converter, run fiber to another TP Link converting back to Ethernet to the digital transport/streamer. This sounded better, and convinced me to invest more.

Next I upgraded to a better router, out to an "audiophile" Ethernet switch (Paul Pang Quad Switch with OXCO clocks and toroidal power supplies) to a better quality Ethernet-to-fiber converter (LHY Audio FMC Ethernet Purifier Optical Transceiver +OCXO), out to a better quality transport with Fiber In option (so I didn't require a second converter back to Ethernet).

I'm not sure Paul Pang is making switches anymore, but LHY has some great quality ones at relatively reasonable prices - by good qulaity I mean a switch made with OXCO clocks, great power supplies (not switch mode), and optional fiber In/Out (which is especially preferred if you have a transport/streamer with Fiber in).

So, short answer, I am a firm believer in creating as clean a signal as possible from the internet to your DAC, and incorporating Fiber, even at $125 for a couple converters and some fiber optic cable, is a worthy investment in sound quality improvement.

Thanks guys. I was both hoping and fearing where this leads.

Hereafter- I currently have internet coming in to a router with Ethernet ports. My streamer/DAC has the option for fiber in so I’ve been curious about using it. I’m curious what you have experienced and what SQ changes resulted, good or bad.

Ghostship- this sounds like a worthy endeavor. I am starting where you started and now wondering if I shouldn’t start where you ended after trying some different things. I purchased an MC220L and a pair of transceivers. Waiting to receive them to compare to against my normal connection.

It’s kind of wild to me that shielding and isolation have so much more to do with SQ than bits but it makes sense once you think about it. There’s definitely part of me that is nostalgic for the analog source but the sheer amount of music available digitally and the SQ that digital provides these days is worth the journey.

It's not just the bits, but the high-frequency switching noise within the components and power supplies, EMF, RF, Ping/Latency, and Jitter that all negatively affect the sound. Fiber doesn't cure all of it, but it allows us to move the router/wifi source well away from our stereo system, and drops a lot of the noise in the conversion from wire to fiber. I even noticed an improvement when I replaced the convertors' Switch Mode wallwart power supplies with low-noise versions from iFi.

Amazingly, not all SFP modules are the same either, with some realizing greater sound quality improvements over others. There are even Active Optical Cables like this (https://www.lsolink.com/product/330201/ where the SFP module is preinstalled on the cable. Because the cable length is a known quantity, this allows the use of lower-wattage electronics in the converter and eliminates mechanical connectors, which result in a perceptible sound improvement.

MM, I am in full agreement with Ghostship in that optical for me on my 2 systems are a definite SQ enhancement.  There are some differences in opinion on other forums where some members feel it just sounds better without optical.  I started out with a basic set up buying 2 FMC’s with an optical cable on Amazon for $70.  Nice improvement…then I added a dual plug Linear Power Supply where both FMC could be clean powered…even better improvement.  I then added an EtherRegan switch with clock which I didn’t hear much improvement and sold it.  Next I upgraded ethernet cables and the one going to the streamer off the second FMC made another noticeable improvement. Recently I added Sonore Opticalmodule Deluxes and wow that was the most significant improvement.  Not cheap but well worth it IMHO. They have a built in clock and other filter goodies.  Highly recommended.

My current system set-ups are:
Main System= Mesh router- Sablon Ethernet Cable-Sonore Opticalmodule Deluxe- Optical Cable-Sonore Signature Rendu SE Deluxe Streamer
Second System= Main Router-Veritas Ethernet Cable-Basic FMC- Optical Cable- Sonore Opticalmodule Deluxe- Veritas Ethernet Cable- Gustard R30 Streamer/DAC.

Learnings/Tips:
- When using 2 FMCs or a switch and FMC place the highest quality one closest to the streamer.
- Ethernet cables do make a difference.  Place your best quality cables closest to the streamer.
- LPS power supply’s on FMCs and switches make a difference and should not be overlooked. Don’t need to spend big.  I use a dual output Topping P50 sold on Amazon.
- i added some upgraded Finisar SFP Modules and can’t say I heard an improvement.
- I tried several ethernet filters like the Stack Smoothlan and determined they weren't needed when I added the opticalmodules.

Hope this is some added insight into what works for me, my ears on my systems.  Enjoy and best to you on the journey

Thanks this is all really helpful information. I will definitely be adding a LPS right away.

Lumin specifically references the 10gtek ASF13-24-10-D transceivers. I really like idea of active cables you describe, Ghostship. I have absolutely no clue about any of this aside from recommendations from others. Is there any reason the active cable you linked would not be compatible in my system?

The great thing is that none of these are huge investments so the worst case scenario is that I try a couple different things, they all work, and I can compare the differences I hear.

I checked the manuals for both the MC220L and the Lumin T3x, the active cables I mentioned should work perfectly...although I confess I'm not actually an expert either, lol.

I have fiber coming into my house with VERIZON Fios.  The ONT coverts the fiber to an electrical signal.  After it hits my Verizon router, it goes to my 24 port POE Ubiquiti Network Switch utilizing the SFP port that feeds all 24 ports.

So far so good but then sadly the home run line up to my rack has another 8 port Ubiquiti switch.  While I tried to avoid that…I had no choice because that feeds my laptop, my streamer, my CD player, a security camera, a Wi-Fi extender, and my Sonos subwoofer.

What I can say is that before I use the SFP port… The signal was fine, but I do feel that the SFP port did help with a blacker background… I can’t say by how much but the sound just seemed a bit different.

I have the benefit of having essentially a dedicated internet connection to my streamer. The line coming into my home goes straight to a WiFi router with only one network connection going to my streamer. The only WiFi traffic on the router is my phone which is used for telling the streamer what to play.

In my limited understanding of this whole thing I am guessing this is good. I’m hoping using the fiber port on my streamer will provide isolation for whatever is coming out of my router, and if I get a LPS for the magic box that converts the Ethernet to fiber I’ll be addressing another weak link in the chain. But I’m also prepared to be wrong.

I forgot to mention that I also recommend adding a Linear Power supply to your Modem and Router.   Mine is a combined all in one unit but I also have a second mesh router.  I use a LPS with dual 12v inputs similar to this one in my link with positive results.

That’s a good idea, Hereafter. I’ll see if I can find a seller that will make me a dual output lps that meets the power requirements for both devices.
