Right pre-amp for SE84UFO2.1?
07/18/26 at 22:59:04

i posted earlier about speakers; I'm going with the omega super alnicos (Louis at omega recommended, as did several of you.)

My question now is: what's the best pre-amp for my system?

I have a SE84UFO2.1, a merason mkII dac, a lumin streamer and rel s812 subs.

Thanks.

If you have a single source system you might want to consider getting a ZROCK3 as your preamp/eq.

I added one to my setup in front of my SE34i.6 which is powering Omega Junior Alnico XRS speakers and have been blown away with the improvements it makes to my sources feeding the Rachael amp.

The ZROCk3 improved my digital and analog chains. While testing out the ZROCk3 I connected an Project DC EVO via an iFi Zen Phono 3 which is a nice setup in its own right, but running it through the ZROCK3 had me questioning whether I still needed my more pricey turntable and phono preamp.

Im sure there are many great preamps you can use. Tube is my preference and am using a ARC LS25 MKII and very happy. This however my only tube pre used. Before this was PS Audio Stellar.
Good luck, Cheers Randall

You've asked "What is the best pre-amp"...could you be a little more specific about your needs and expectations to better define "best"?

If you require a pre-amp as a means to connect multiple sources, then the ZRock3 would not be the solution. For that I recommend the ZTPre.

But if you are looking to improve the sound quality from your Merason DAC1 Mk II and SE84UFO2.1, please reconsider the ZRock3. Fully modded with foil signal and level2 power caps and VR tube, the signal quality will match your DAC (and amp if it has the anniversary mods).

More importantly, the rear dial provides gain attenuation between your DAC and amp that allows you to dial in the sweet spot with each preferred tube choice.

Separately, the dial on the front controls the character of the tube buffer, from unity gain adding perfect midrange naturalness, clarity, and focus, while dialing it up increases the improvement in bass response.

This is really a Jack and the Bean Stalk device, from beans to the golden eggs. It is priced right, built on the quick list so you'll receive it in 6 to 9 months rather than 3+ years, and if you decide you don't hear what you hoped, you can easily sell it and recoup the cost.

Does your UFO have only single ended RCA inputs or XLR? This matters because your DAC seems like it is very nice, and "fully balanced." So if you are using the single ended RCA output from your DAC you are likely not getting the best performance your DAC can give you.

If your amp has the balanced XLR inputs, then it narrows down your preamp search to balanced models. If not, then I would look at getting something like the ZBIT to properly convert balanced to single ended and then you can decide if you want to place the ZBIT between the DAC and a single ended preamp or between a balanced preamp and your UFO.
