Downsized to apartment, need new speakers
06/30/26 at 00:30:21

I have a SE84UFO2.1, a vintage declare preamp, a merason mkII dac, a lumin streamer and rel s812 subs. I had paired the system with la scala speakers - and loved the sound.

Just moved into an apartment building where the la scalas won't fit and where I'm going to have to play at medium volume at best. Looking for suggestions for new speakers, under $6k used and not massively big.

I'm not super-technical and not an expert by any means, but what I liked with the la scales was the transparency, the warmth and that "romantic" tube sound.

Thanks.

I recommend Tekton speakers, either the 2-12 Perfect SET or the new Wattmeister Model 2, both designed specifically for flea-watt amps. Tektons sound incredible. I strongly suggest opting for a Beryllium tweeter and crossover upgrade.

I'm a big fan of Omega speakers with my UFO25s. In your situation I would consider one of the stand mounted monitors. I've had the Super AlNiCo monitors for several years now and love them to death.

+1 on the Omega speakers. There is something special about how their Alnico drivers sound.  I’ve had my Super Alnico Monitors for 2 years now and they continue to impress. They have an excellent synergy with the Zen Amps.

Here is something a bit more esoteric, Blumenstein Cain & Cain Abby II's.

https://www.blumensteinaudio.com/all-products/abby-mk-ii-wide-band-speaker

96 dB efficient, hand built, kind of artisanal, you would be the only person on the block with these.

My favorite speakers that I have tried with the Zen amps are the HR-1. In a smaller apartment and if you don't want to shake the walls and upset the neighbors this pairing produces great, rich sound.

Admittedly I haven't tried a lot of other speakers the last two decades, but I didn't fell the need to explore further when using a modded C, the SE84UFO3 Monoblocks or a Zen clone amp.

You might also want to look at anything by Zu audio. I learned about Zu from this forum, and their high sensitivity speakers pair beautifully with Decware amps. Just as importantly, they have a much smaller footprint without sacrificing sound. I’d particularly recommend looking for a used pair of Zu Audio Druids. The new Druid 6 retails for 12k, but you can often find used Druid 5s on AudioMart for under your 6k budget. I’ve had the Druid 5s paired with an SE84UFO25 for 4 years and it’s a great combination. In addition to their small footprint, high sensitivity, and great sound, the Zus have the added benefit of being really attractive speakers, which becomes more important in a smaller space.  Good luck.
