AMT option for Caintuck Audio baffles
06/19/26 at 03:14:17

Over the past few years, the Lii Song Audio line of full range drivers have made quite an impact on the audio hobby.

I have built and sold baffles for hundreds of pairs of these drivers and I'm sure that hundreds (or even thousands) of these drivers have been used by DIY builders.

The F-15 and F-12 drivers really are pretty amazing.
They are much "quicker" and have more detail and high frequency extension than a large driver normally has.
Steve Deckert has stated that the low mass of the primary cones has a great deal to do with this ..... and he is certainly correct.

However, quite a few owners of these drivers have stated that they would like a little more extension at the top end of the frequency range.
The folks at Lii Song heard these observations and responded by producing the Ting tweeters

The Ting tweeters are pretty amazing and provide all of the top end that any normal music lover could ask for ..... even if they enjoy listening to dog whistles .....

Several of my customers have asked if there were any other options to extend the high frequencies of the Lii Song full range drivers.

I gave it some thought and remembered something that I built a few years ago ..... a two-way baffle using a Wild Burro Betsy driver (without the whizzer cone) and a dipole Air Motion Transformer that is sold by Parts Express.

Only a couple of pairs of these were built, but when I took them to the Decware Fest that year, they were well received and both pairs went home with attendees of the Fest.

Larger photo here.

So, I decided to build some add on modules for the AMT drivers that could be used with the Caintuck Audio baffles.

I also made a small box that can sit on the base of the F-12 or F-15 baffle which contains a Mundorf PIO capacitor, crossing the AMT driver over at 12K.

The capacitor value can be changed for those who want more or less top end.

There are wires coming from the box to connect to the Lii Song driver ..... terminated with banana plugs and to the AMT driver terminated with crimp on connectors that plug into the tabs of the driver.

The wiring is all oxygen free copper (OFC).

All that is needed for installation is drilling four small holes in the back of the baffle to mount the AMT "module".

Even a caveman can do it ..... LOL

The drivers can be ordered from Parts Express and take five minutes to pop into the AMT modules.
That way, the buyer has the full warranty from Parts Express.

I really like this setup because in addition to being an excellent sounding driver, the AMT is dipole ..... which works nicely with an open baffle loudspeaker.

I haven't decided on a price for the "kit" yet.
As you might imagine, making the module and the crossover box is pretty labor intensive ..... so if anyone has any questions or thoughts, please let me know.

I will have a pair of F-15 baffles fitted with the AMT modules at Decware Fest 2026 ..... as well as a pair of the Ting tweeters.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there .....

Happy listening,
Randy

Oops .....

A good friend just brought to my attention that I have a typo in the information provided above.

The Mundorf caps are "EVO" ..... not "PIO".
Too many acronyms for my old brain to keep track of.

I also forgot to provide a link to the AMT drivers for the DIY music lovers who would like to build something themselves ..... so here is the link.

This driver is certainly not the most extended high frequency driver available, as it rolls off around 18K. However, it is "musical", and robust, and does a good job of extending the frequency response of the F-15 driver, which rolls off pretty quickly at around 12K.

There is something special about the sound of a good AMT driver, IMO.

Happy listening,
Randy

Randy,

This looks like a fantastic upgrade option for those of us enjoying your wonderful F15 baffles. I hope folks get a chance to listen to the combo at Decfest 2026. And please remember folks just because it's being held at a castle it doesn't mean there will be a jousting tournament😂🤣.

NIce!  A “ Stand Up” F15 version of the ZROB.  I expect it sounds excellent and takes the F15’s to another level.  👏

I have been working on the AMT module project and am pretty close to having it ready.

A visitor purchased my Lii Song F-15 baffles and I haven't had time to build another pair, so I mounted the current AMT "baffles" on my Audio Nirvana Super-15 baffles.

I had to slightly change the shape of the AMT baffle because the original was fragile on the bottom edges and subject to breaking.
The revised shape is a lot sturdier and still looks pretty good to me.

Larger photo here.

I'm liking what I'm hearing.
The AMT drivers are not as forward sounding as the Ting tweeters and don't quite have the same "wow factor" ..... but they are very musical and the dipole configuration works very well with an open baffle.

I will have the final details wrapped up soon ..... stay tuned .....

Happy listening,
Randy

I have been using these same tweeters on the ZROB open baffles for around a year now, and they are one of my favorite tweeters of all time. Never drawing attention to themselves, especially in a dipole arrangement.  : )

Thanks Steve,

I can't think of a better way to describe what I hear from these drivers ...

I just added a page for the AMT modules to my website.

Here is the link.

I will have two pairs of baffles with these AMT modules at the Decware Fest in October.

One pair of Lii Song F-15 baffles
One pair of Audio Nirvana Super 15 baffles

Looking forward to seeing everyone there,
Randy

Well ..... I finally made some time to build a pair of F-15 baffles with the AMT drivers ..... a visitor had purchased the demo pair that I had in the listening room .....

Here is a photo of them in red oak.

Larger photo HERE.

After completing them, I had a customer from Louisville, KY visit me.
He owns a pair of F-15 baffles.

Halfway through he first song we played, he said "send me an invoice for the AMT modules".

Apparently, he heard the same thing that I am hearing.

I will be taking orders for the AMT modules after the Decware Fest.

There will be two pairs of baffles at the Decware Fest with the AMT modules ..... a pair of Lii Song F-15s and a pair of Audio Nirvana Super 15s.

I'm looking forward to some feedback from the attendees.

The link to the AMT page of my website is HERE.

Happy listening,
Randy

Randy was kind enough to build me a pair of the AMTPRO-4 baffles in Curly Cherry for my Caintuck Audio F-15 baffles. I just fnished up attaching these (see below) and hooking up the capacitor box and cabling per his very clear instructions.

I'll report back some impressions after the drivers and capacitors have some time to settle in. Suffice it to say I'm a very happy listener this morning. FWIW, the Magnum baffles are 4 yrs. old or so. I expect the AMT baffles will darken quite a bit as they age. That's what cherry wood does.

So it's been a week and I have about 40-46 hours with the AMTPRO-4 tweeters & mini baffles in place. I'm not sure the capacitors.in Randy's little boxes are fully settled in, but here are some initial listening notes:

- A totally immersive listening experience. The addition of higher end frequency material has expanded the soundstage immensely and is more holographic than ever. The music just wraps around me. I just keep adding the phrase "holy crap" and "did I just hear that".

- The upper frequencies provide pinpoint images of individual instruments and voices with seemingly additional details that the F15 alone just provide. There is additional air which captures vocals in an even greater sense of realism. Nils Lofgren's live version of Keith Don't Go and Bill Frisell's rendition of Shenandoah simply blew my mind.

I plan to do a lot of listening to an extremely well recorded collection of music available on Qobuz entitled "Best Played With Theroretica BACCH II" compiled by Steve08226 (who I believe is a forum member). Here is a link to the Qobuz playlist for those interested:

Listen to the playlist Best Played with Theoretica BACCH II by Steve08226 on Qobuz https://open.qobuz.com/playlist/18476652

More to come in another week or so.

Good to hear your thoughts on these. I believe Randy was using my baffles to test them out. The holes are filled, but they’re pre marked.  :)

I have one question, does the addition of these raise the soundstage upwards? I’m loving the F15s, but the soundstage is on average lower than I’d like.

Geno,

The soundstage is higher, wider and much deeper. The treble frequency response provides better spatial cues to my ears. But the holographic listening experience on many recordings is just remarkable.

Randy sent me the AMT tweeter kit to test with my Caintuck F-15 Magnum speakers. After a couple of weeks of listening below are my impressions. TL/DR: They AMT are not needed, but worth it to get that last 5%-10% out of these incredible speakers.

Test System Components
Amps: Decware SE34I.6 (Rachael), Pass INT60, Wilsenton R8, Schiit Aegir 2F, Schiit Gjallarhorn F
Preamp: Schiit Kara F
DAC/Streamer/EQ: Geshelli Torc, Holo Audio Red, Decware ZROCK3
Turntable/ Phono Pre: Vinyl Nirvana TD 160 Super, PS Audio Stellar Phono
Speakers: Caintuck F-15 Magnums, dual W-15 Magnums w/ Crown XLS1002

AMT Tweeter Install
Installing the AMT tweeter was very straightforward and only took about 20 minutes. The AMT housing is built with the same quality and good looks as the Magnum baffles. Adding the AMT to the Magnum baffles gives the speaker a bowling pin look, but it's not bad once you get used to it.

Listening Impressions
I'll start by saying I love the system without the AMT tweeters. I have the Magnum baffles for over a year and never found the top end lacking based on the types of music I listen to and my tastes. I listen to mostly jazz, acoustic, classic rock, R&B, blues and some electronic and hard rock. I can be sensitive to treble so I was concerned that adding the AMT to the system might make things too hot or treble forward for me. This was not the case.

Adding the AMT tweeters to the system I immediately noticed the increased sense of air and space they brought to the presentation. I could hear more treble extension on cymbal hits and finer details on piano keys, vibes, drum brushes, and fingers on strings. The effects are subtle but additive. My fears of too much treble were unwarranted. I think you have nailed the treble crossover point.

The treble smoothness is enhanced when I have the W-15 bass baffles engaged. Without the bass baffles the treble is very good, but filling out the low end just enhances the overall presentation. With the full Caintuck speaker system in place I’m getting a greater sense of depth hearing more into the mix vs a wall of sound. I also, highly recommend using dual bass baffles. 1 is great but 2 makes everything sound perfect throughout the room.

The quality of amplification matters with this setup, especially with the tweeters. With the Rachael and INT60 the speaker system—with and without the AMTs—is exceptional. Those amps are able to present treble in a smooth detailed fashion without ever sounding harsh. I listened for hours with these combos without fatigue. The Decware and Pass setups with Caintuck continue to cost me sleep. It's very hard to turn the system off and not just listen to one more song.

Other amps used for testing included the Schiit Aegir 2F and Gjallarhorn F. The Gjallarhorn was the big surprise. Its 10W @ 8 ohm is plenty to drive the Caintuck well. The Aegir 2F is made for speakers like the Caintucks. The Aegir 2F provides a SET like quality of midrange sweetness and bloom that is very enjoyable to listen to. The Schiit amps aren't as refined as the Decware or Pass amps, but at their relative price points, they are arguably a better buy. One can listen to these Schiit amps with the Caintuck speakers and have 80-90% of the experience had with the more expensive amps.

The Wilsenton R8 was also very good with the Caintuck speakers but this combo was also the only one that gave me treble fatigue. I don't blame the speakers for this as this amp has proven to be too treble-forward for me on all but the darkest speakers. From what I've read and heard from others, this is a characteristic of this amp that is really only fixed by replacing some caps inside the unit. A mod I plan to make at some point in the future.

I'll wrap up by saying this. The AMT are not needed for the Caintuck F-15 Magnum to sound great. They are, however, icing on the cake for those who want that last bit of refinement in sound quality. The overall value proposition of my Caintuck speaker system (F-15 Magnum, AMT Tweeter Kit, dual W-15 Magnum, Crown XLS1002) at about $3500 all in is near impossible to match at that pricepoint. This speaker system plays well with amps like the $300 Schiit Gjallarhorn all the way up to a $10K Pass INT60.

To my ears the Caintuck system competes with speakers 3x-4x its price. While not an apples to apples match (OB vs box speakers) the Dynaudio Confidence 20 which retails for around $13K is a remarkable speaker that the Caintuck system is not embarrased by. I'm certain from a sound quality perspective that very few would be dissatisfied having the Caintucks as their main speaker system.

Excellent review!  Thanks for taking the time to post your experience.  Now every time I see those speakers with the AMT tweeters I can’t stop seeing a bowling pin 🤣.  I bet they sound great!  Especially with the nice components and dual subs.  I have played around with a slightly different set up with similar excellent results.  I have DIY Zrob’s with Fast-15’s where after forum suggestions I decided to add Steve’s Fast15 Network Notch Filters (to tame the Fast15 fatiguing highs), a similar dipole GRS Planar tweeter facing the ceiling protected at ~600 and second GRS Neo ribbon stand alone tweeter protected at ~4000.  Insane I know!  I thought the 2 tweeters combined with the Fast15 insanity might be too much and not play well together but now with cap and wire break-in these speakers are just mesmerizing. Every time I listen I can’t believe what I am hearing and I  don’t want to turn them off.  A good problem to have.  These Fast15’s and F15’s seem to really benefit with the added AMT/planar/ribbon tweeters and Super tweeters.
