I have a set of Alan Eaton monoblocks, they are magical. Very different than my UFOs, much more pronounced low end, but not baggy or inflated. They are rich and dense. Right now I am running a set of Stradi tubes in them and those too are amazing.

Do you mean specifically the EML 45B, or Type 45 tubes in general? Several posters have 45 based amps, but I've yet to see any reference to a 45B amp anywhere. Which doesn't mean they don't exist.

Hey Guys, thanks for the responses. I also have an Alan Eaton 45 amp. And a Dennis Had (Inspire) 45 amp. I enjoy them both, but I’m specifically referring to the 45B tube, which has the potential to put out @5W/channel, with different circuitry than a standard 45 tube amp. And yes, CAJ, EML is the only company that I’ve been able to find that makes the 45B. I spoke to Dennis Had about modifying my 45 amp, but he suggested moving to the DJH 45B amp, which will take advantage of the increased power of the 45B. So I’m mulling it over at the moment, and I just wondered if anyone else had a 45B amp, or had any info about the changes to the circuitry that are needed to use the 45B. I would hate to lose the magic of the 45 sound, so I’m hoping that the changes to the circuits aren’t too complex. I would just like a little more headroom.

My guess is the change in the circuit is minimal. Just run the tube at a higher voltage with more current. The (audio) circuit for most any SET amp is extremely simple. I would be more worried about the change in the tube itself. Pretty much everyone agrees the 45 as some "magic." Can EML keep the magic and beef up the tube to handle the extra power? I'd be afraid that a beefed up 45 just becomes a 2A3 or 300B. But JMO/FWIW and all that.

Thanks, CAJ. More for me to think about. I should probably try to audition a 45B amp before I get carried away. Maybe as time goes on, more amp builders will take advantage of the increased wattage of the 45B. Or not. Your fears may prove to be well founded, and the magic may be lost at the higher power.
