PSA - SCAM ALERT

Decware Fam,

Please be aware of scammers lurking in our classifieds.

I recently posted a WTB message and got a DM from DannyDrey, suggesting I contact another member who may have several SE34I.6 for sale. I first sent a DM to Fstnblbs and didn't get a response, so I sent an email to the provided contact (redskinbears805@gmail.com).
This person, going by the name Tyrese Campbell, claims to be the original owner of this SE34I.6 and provides several AI-enhanced images, asking for a $500 Zelle deposit to TyreseDCampbell32@gmail.com, which is a fresh ID.

I confirmed with Sarah that the name "Tyrese Campbell" did not match the owner of this serial number.

Be careful out there.

Good night,
Peter

Same experience here some months ago.
I also received AI generated images of a Decware amp.
Also via a gmail account.
The scammer even copied a legit persons name with his fake email address, making it even harder to identify the scam.
The images looked too weird though.
I sincerely hope no one here gets tricked.

Peter,

Good idea to "confirmed with Sarah that the name "Tyrese Campbell" did not match the owner of this serial number."

Thanks for the tip.

The question is what does "being careful" look like. One thing you can do is if you get a message, click on the account and look at the posting history. In the case of DannyDrey it is what the kids call "sus."

Network and computer security was (part of) my day job for many years and there are generally two types of bad actors on message boards. One is the low level, petty vandalism kind of unsophisticated hackers we call script kiddies. They get a program aka script on the internet that lets them break into message boards and make posts. It is like internet graffiti, and while annoying is basically harmless.

The other is people running scams. This takes a lot more work and I would not have considered the Decware classifieds a target worth the effort. But either Decware has become a big deal, or AI has made this easy or some of both because it sure looks like DannyDrey made the effort. In the AI age it is getting harder and harder to sniff out scams via DMs or email.

One thing scammers (almost) always do is insist on a "friends and family" type of payment, like Zelle or Paypal F&F that can't be disputed. When in doubt make sure your payment is reversible, or just walk away. There isn't a lot of used Decware gear for sale, but I think you are less likely to have problem if you stick to advertised sales on legit sites, esp. by sellers with a history.

Yes, if it is the original owner. But note that if the amp has been resold the owner would only match the serial number if they had done a warranty transfer.

Best to deal with a known member here who was posted a lot such as CAJames or Lon - it is too easy for somebody to join the forum make a few posts and pass himself off as a legitimate person.

I agree with CAJames.

Look up the person's last 15 posts and read them.
It is pretty easy to spot the fake ones by their responses. Lots of "I agree" comments.
