Captive power cord to IEC adapter?
02/04/26 at 00:08:30

Does anyone do this? Use a converter for the captive power cord to IEC to take advantage of better power cables?

So I have older electronics, a Nakamichi cassette deck, and music on cassettes I can't get anywhere else.

Will plugging the captive power cord on the Nak into a NEMA 5-15R to IEC C14 adapter, and then using an upgraded power cable, actually be a benefit?

Since nobody is going to build a modern cassette deck with IEC Wink

I remember thinking my clone Dynakit ST-70 would have benefited from IEC instead of the regular captive cord, how could they not upgrade to IEC (!), and then I actually saw this on a modern ST-70.

I've cut power cords and wired in an IEC receptacle bfore and used a fancier power cord and did notice an improvement. I've also used this successfully:

Lon, I took your suggestion for the Audioquest IEC and combined it with a Decware DHC3 power cord.

I tried my Nakamichi BX-300 without it, and had so-so bass, there, but nothing special. Then I hooked in the EIC with the DHC3, and got a great sound. Really great bass, soundstage, and detail.

I've seen the Decware DHC3 do this before on my system, a huge step up in performance. But putting in the Audioquest IEC adapter is what allowed the Nakamichi captive cord to bump up to the upgraded power cord. Totally worth it.

Thanks for the suggestion !!

So glad that worked out! I have enjoyed its use as well, a nicely designed product that doesn't degrade performance, and allows the improvement of better power cords in fact to up to three devices.
