For a couple months now I've been recovering from surgery and have not been active in the forum. It was shortly after surgery that I got my Dynagrid Jr. delivered and have been listening to it ever since. During this time, I ordered two 845 tubes, although it took quite amount of time and effort to get a graphene sluggo in house. The sluggo finally arrived less than two weeks ago. The first 845 tube I decided to purchase was a Shuguang WE 845 tube and the second was a Linlai 845-DG tube. Both were in the $200 to $250 range. The 845-DG tube finally arrived about 3 days ago.
I installed the graphene sluggo and began listening to the stock Linlai 845-T tube and listened to it for approximately 4 1/2 days, in order to get a perspective on the base sound. I then installed the WE 845 tube and listened to it until the 845-DG tube arrived. There was an immediate impression of extended highs, much more detail and a seemingly less richness in the sound. Upon further listening it became apparent that this was a very transparent sound with noticeable holographic imaging. In time I realized the voices and the instruments sounded just as rich but the spacing between each did not have the veil that comes across as richness. In many ways the sound was quite intoxicating and was definitely preferable over the base 845-T. It was a sound that I thought I could very easily live with.
Once my Linlai 845-DG tube arrived, I installed it into my system. My first impression was the the sound was very rich, airy and detailed. In the past when I've heard sound this harmonically rich, it usually was related to a lack of extended highs and/or a lack of transparency. With break-in, I realized this was a very different experience. I began to realize the richness was related to information density that I’ve never heard before. The sound was transparent, airy and the bass was on another level of power and slam. It sounded like it was another octave deeper than before. The sound was much more dynamic and vivid than before. This was not subtle difference in sound. I would even describe it as a fundamental difference in sound.
If you are still listening to the 845-T tube, the Linlai 845-DG tube Has shown me that there is still so much more potential in the Dynagrid Jr. design by Steve. Although I don't pretend that this is the end all of potential 845 tube replacements, this tube is a serious upgrade over the stock tube and is highly recommended. As of this moment, I have found two listings for under $250. One was on aliexpress.com and the other was on eBay. The links are below:
