Better at night….? Do I need a power conditioner?

Hello fanatics…

I have been diving deep. I endnote and leave no rock unturned…. I am curious…

Maybe it is the scotch… laphroig… Smokey, delicious… maybe it is the winter…. But i swear, it all does come together at night.

I understand this is due to less noise in the power grid.

I have installed two dedicated outlets, with fancy recepticals… and it’s marvelous.

It’s all marvelous. But i am a hedonist with my ears… and so i wonder.

If it seems clear, that even with dedicated outlets, my sublime mystical machine sounds better at night…

Do I need one of these power conditioners?

Or are they for those with dirty power within their home, and all are subject to the power grid’s fluctuations….

(Unless a decent battery…?)

Curious what you all think is the path to yet more nirvana….

R.

Yes, for blissful daylight hours. That sun really plays havoc on the power grid.

I chose a passive scheme for power conditioning. It finally fell in place after many years.

Enjoy your journey Cool

Go over to Flick's Charoit in the Members System Picture Gallery Forum. I spell it out there over my audio journey.

By passive power conditioning I mean no regeneration or box that does it all. I do not think that those boxes is a complete solution to taming fluctuating AC power and I'm not just talking 60 cycles.

Synopsis:

Balanced transformer

Capacitor banks

9 gauge romex home run feed for an isolated outlet(6 gauge would be ideal with an appropriate connection)

Another home run feed for system dirty power connections

Grounding boxes

Swiss Digital Fuse Boxes

All Directional 10 gauge shielded power cords for components

VR tubes

Steve has talked about how power, and therefore sound, is better a night. Both because of the sun and the power grid stretched to the max. A balanced isolation transformer is a big help, esp. in the big city. It seems like a lot of people really like the power regeneration boxes, but that is a whole ‘nother rabbit hole down which you can go.

Fascinating. I love that one can hear the effects of the sun in the ear.

Would anyone have a way to quell the noise at daytime? Something relatively easy to deploy, and within a few hundred or so few thousand $$$???

For hundreds you can get a balanced isolation transformer and/or one of the battery packs people have been talking about. A well done regenerator is likely the best option but they run into the thousands.

Looking into a balanced isolation transformer…

Interesting. Would I need it for my amp only? Or all of my components (dac, streamer, phone preamp, and soon a zrock)

Is there one in particular that is often recommended by you or others in the decware community?

Was also considering a battery, ideally one between my box and dedicated outlets… is that possible ?
Thanks,
Richard.

I got my transformer from eBay, aka China. Decware makes a nice one. The more gear you have on transformers the better.

I see. The decware zen line conditioner is yet another captivating product.

Is the wait yet another 6 months…? Looking for one used but so far nothing I can find….

Could you provide a link to one similar to what you got off eBay?

Ry,

My SS amp came with an outboard power supply and is utterly silent.

The company that I bought it from has AC filters, that while I haven't heard one personally, is really highly touted.  The Audiophile Junkie on YouTube even sells a version of the Angela-Gilbert Yeung filter.

Watch some of Angela-Gilbert Yeung's YouTube videos talking about noise and such.
I will pre warn you about AGY, "They" are different but a genus.

Here is what they have in the line of power filtering

I've run my system on two different power plants, more recently the EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max Power Station. I paid mid 300's total for it. The power from it, even plugged into the wall, is much cleaner than power from the wall. You will notice an immediate difference for the better, including more bass weight. The one drawback is this smaller power station has fan cooling that can be heard, when it turns on. Fortunate for me, the only reasonable place I had to put it, a cabinet only open to the back, eliminated the problem. My larger Delta 3 Max has fan cooling but so quiet I've never heard it.

Yes I read your thread on this before and was interested in the ecoflow.

Is it possible to install it between the box to the house and the outlet near my system?

Would the battery achieve the same thing as the conditioner, just through different means? What are their pros and cons?

Specifically, would it filter out the noise and solar interference which makes daytime listening a bit hazy?

Thank you all. This is brilliant stuff.

Seems like there were more options when I bought mine a few years ago. But this is in the ballpark:

In the sense that they clean up power, yes the same thing. But the difference is always in the details. The balanced transformer does this the same way as e.g. balanced connections in your stereo. It differences positive and negative phases and common noise cancels out.

The battery regenerates AC from the battery (DC) using inverter(s). In my experience (battery backups for computers and networking) this is very noisy, but apparently this technology is much better. I don't know anything about it beyond what is in the forum.

A power regenerator is essentially a power amp the plays one note at 60 Hz. Lon and some other posters have these and seem to be very happy, but they are the high dollar solution depending on how many amps you need.

I too have noticed this as well (better sound at night, single malt Scotch in hand (if you like the Islay Scotches you might want to try the five year old Ardbeg, but fair warning, it’s very smoky and peaty, my buddy says it’s like drinking a forest fire!) and have scoured the forum for same insight.

I have a zen Line Conditioner on order and am looking forward to hearing what it might bring to my listening sessions.  Everything I’ve added to the rig (Decware ICs, Swiss Digital Fuse Boxes, Decware PCs and ZSTYX speaker cables, and now the Dynagrid) has provided positive results, some more than others.

I’m out in the boondocks and on rural power which has its moments.  So I’m hoping I too can find that “late night sound” in the middle of the day.

Well, I didn't want this to turn into a Scotch discussion (I lied, I'm always up for a Scotch discussion) but +1 for Islay and +2 for Ardbeg. I have a bottle of cask strength that is one of my prized possessions.

Slàinte mhath!
