Brimar 807 frolic fail in Rachael and Torii Jr

So I thought I'd experiment with some 807's w/ adaptors in my Rachael amplifiers .... well mostly because all those pics on the website look so cool with the spark plug wire and cap and all. I was hoping for some sonic magic as well if it happened.

I bought 2 NOS matched? quartets and adaptors . Brimar Military cv124/807's. I first tried them in my .5 Rachael and I thought they sounded stiff? edgy?? I kind of give up ( or hate ) trying to describe sound with words these days. They just didnt sound that good but I figure break in time could be the popular savior. Idk but then I popped them in my .6 Rachael w/ level 2 mods and I heard what I can only describe as preamp type noise ( rushing? ) . I cant remember ever hearing that type of noise coming from a power tube but who knows my memory is tricky these days.

PT 2 coming as I l know reading long posts can be tiring

They came right back out of my Rachael .6 as the noise was disappointing and bugging me. I had 8 total tubes so I thought I'd have a tube rolling chess game with myself. I popped another duet back in my Rachael.5 and there I heard the same type of noise in that amp.
I did this for a bit thinking at times the noise would disappear after warm up but it seemed to come back. my brain was getting worn out at this point and even at best moments they never really sounded good compared to EL34's , KT66 or 6L6's etc that Ive tried in the amps.

Switching gears to my Torri JR v2 , all I got was severe hum with any position combination I tried which tells me they werent matched to very close tolerances. That ended that game quickly.

So since my EL34's and other tube types sound so good in these amps I'll just either give up completely on 807's  ( the Brimars will never see action in my amps again ) or possibly do some more research and find what's considered a better sounding 807 tube to give it another shot at a later date.

I think I read these Brimar 807's are a 1970's production tube ?? I'm not sure as date codes are not my strong point.

I briefly popped these into an Elekit amp I have and were noisy in it as well so Im pretty sure it's the tubes themselves.

I only have 4 adapters so trying a bunch of different adaptors was not a further test for me but my hunch is the adaptors are fine.

The tubes are bad. Chances are they are Soviet to begin with as the Soviet 807s were often bought without silk screening and labeled as some other manufacturer.

I believe that to be true Rivi. The reason I'll never re sell them. I'd like to think that I can help the case of culls and rejects being dumped back out into the audio community. I'll keep them for looks or display candy or destroy them.

I've been running some nice RCA 807 NOS circa 1940's for a couple years in my .6 Rachael - they sound great.

Found at Andy's Vintage Tube Services.

Still under $50 each . . .

It may take a while to place an order; back when I ordered he preferred a phone call rather than email inquiries.

Ahhh like the old days when Angela Instruments mailed out a list and you had to call and drop your Visa # and wait to see if you got the tubes you wanted. LOL

RCA's from a solid dealer is probably the path I should have chosen and that price compared to all of the new "high end" Chinese tubes seems like a bargain.

I used a quad of USN Westinghouse 807’s in my Torii Jr v2.  They were a notch up from other 6L6’s.  Such a  nice clean deep full room filling SQ.  Not quite as detailed as the mullard EL34 xf2’s but every bit as enjoyable at a fraction of the cost.  Also, I rotate in a pair of NOS GE 807 in my preamp the perform beautifully.  Never had any issues to speak of with 807’s
