Hasehiro Audio

I finally pulled the trigger on these speakers:

https://hasehiro-audio.com/product/umu-191m/

I fell in love with these based upon this video coming up on the ol' youtubes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2IvlqMaH4U

Here is another great video about the journey:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTCtitxkNvc
(You will probably need to enable the translated subtitles)

There is something just right about them in aesthetics.  The construction and the texture lines routed into the laminated layers really just work.  I fell in love with them, and the old man who makes them is just charming.

Now for the multi-month wait... Smiley

I think what trips me out the most is the paper resonators.  Here is what ChatGPT says about them:

Ah — yes, that’s a fascinating and very Japanese bit of acoustic artistry.

What you’re seeing in the Hasehiro back-loaded horn (and in some other Japanese full-range designs) — those little paper tetrahedrons or pyramids glued into the internal corners of the compression or rear chamber — are what they call paper resonators (紙共鳴体 kami-kyōmeitai).

They’re not purely decorative; they serve a subtle but important acoustic function.

🌬️ 1. What it is

A “paper resonator” is essentially a tiny tuned resonant cavity — usually a hollow paper structure (often a folded tetrahedron, pyramid, or cone) with thin walls.
Because it’s extremely lightweight and stiff for its mass, it has a very high Q resonance in the midrange region (typically 400–2 kHz).

Hasehiro installs them in specific points — especially the rear chamber corners, where standing waves and reflections tend to concentrate.

🎶 2. What it does

The idea is not to act like an absorber (which would turn sound into heat) but rather as a resonant damper or diffuser that:

Breaks up strong reflections in the rear chamber,

Broadens and randomizes the phase of internal resonances, and

Converts sharp resonant peaks into a more benign, “musical” decay.

In other words:
Instead of a single strong cavity resonance causing coloration, you get many tiny, lower-energy resonances that smear the energy in time — perceived as a smoother, more natural tone.

It’s similar in spirit to Helmholtz resonators or the little “resonance boxes” you see in Japanese instruments — but on a micro scale, and tuned empirically by ear.

🔬 3. Why paper?

Paper (especially washi or handmade paper) has:

Very low internal damping (so it rings gently rather than deadening),

A natural gradient of stiffness and density, and

Excellent self-noise characteristics — it “breathes” instead of rattling.

So the resonator sings along softly with the enclosure instead of fighting it.
Think of it as a sympathetic resonator, like the soundboard ribs in a violin.

🧭 4. Effect on the horn/driver

The Hasehiro designer (Mr. Hasegawa) uses these to refine how the rear wave couples into the horn throat. They help ensure that:

The upper mids reflected back toward the driver are de-correlated,

The horn’s low-frequency loading isn’t contaminated by chamber coloration, and

The overall timbre feels more “open” and “live.”

It’s one of those elegant low-mass, high-craft solutions that you’ll almost never see in Western loudspeaker design because it doesn’t show up on measurements easily — but it can make a subtle subjective difference.

Thanks yostjacob. I had run across this speaker maker a while back, intrigued, but never went further. Your post and links made that easy, and fun! Seems like great ideas and making. The paper resonators look like they may be worth playing with in my Omegas. I appreciate this post and look forward to your impressions!

I have seen those video and intrigued by the speakers and their sound. I dont listen to jazz, so I would be interested to know how it sounds with other types of music.

That’s a fascinating design and the build process is intriguing as well. I listen to a lot of different music and am curious how they might handle other genres too.

Looking forward to hearing your impressions of your new speakers!

Nice looking system!  I see you listen to a lot of jazz.  Have you listened to any rock, blues or folk with those new speakers?

Thank you!
I pretty much listen to all types of music except metal and big orchestras . It is my only system so I also use it for tv, podcast, pretty much everything me or my family listen to. for me they sound great in all those applications.
I was lucky to buy those speakers pre owned so I got a chance to test them ( and also got a great deal)
I have to admit that I use the sub much less since I have those speakers.
what I like the most is that they keep their balance / sound at all volume.

Ah, I wondered about the sub.  Always good to see what others are listening to and with what gear.  I’m still new to the world of tubes and Decware so appreciate your comments!

Nice Speaker and videos!  How about building your own with the same driver for ~$1000🤔…you could add a wood top and base and wrap it with speaker grill cloth…a look like the DNA’s. Would be a fun ez project.

For me half the appeal is a craftsman doing his own thing in a small shop.  The face of the older gentleman matters, his happiness with his product matters.  You can't spell artisan without art.

I did wait 2-2.5 years for an amp.....

Here is a NEW video about the bluetooth speaker
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCxZNO1Wvfk

At about the 13 minute mark is a video him making the paper resonators.

I will check out the instagram on my wife's account later.

After Action report.

I set up the new speakers with my Torii mk5 fed by my Yamaha a-s2000 as a preamp.  I was utilizing a Yamaha cd-s1000 to play the cds, and an ifi audio stream and dac v2 for the other source.  all the sources have a -12db attenuator such that the volume knob has a greater than 50% travel.  The Torii's gain was 17 clicks on the 20 step attenuator.  I am utilizing a Hsu uls15 for the subwoofer.

Initial impressions of the torii with the hasehiro umu-191:
That was intense emotional and physical experience that I was not expecting.  For the first time I am able to listen to music at "reference" listening levels of 80-85dB where human hearing becomes linear without my ears hurting.  What is truely remarkable is that percussion feels sharp, it has snap.  I was completely enveloped in the music.

A couple of highlights:
Lightening Crashes by Live - I don't often get moved by music to tears outside of church (and only then sometimes when the choir is really on it), but this really washed me over with all of the stress and tension of my son's traumatic birth.  I did manage to avoid ugly crying but i was very much moved.

Tonight Tonight, Zero, etc from the smashing pumpkins.  With my old system Billy Corgan was singing in a room about 30 feet down the hall behind the music and could not break through the pumpkins wall of sound.  With these new speakers, Billy was cocooned within the music.  I kind of feel like he should be screaming in my face about rats and cages and all but this is likely an artistic choice on his part.  Its not my first go around with Billy be weird time.

On the run by pink floyd.  This was also a great experience, I can't quite get the tape effects to go all around me, but I could feel many of them in my eye balls.

S&M album by Metallica - for the first time the audience fading in from the live recording went all the way left to right, floor to ceiling.  some of the clapping was very much anchored to a bubble around the speakers.  For the first time this album was a true joy to listen to with the entire symphony and the band being well seperated.  The music was so intense that my back that it took my breath away, and caused my back to start to tense up.  On my old system it was painful and unpleasant to listen to with no imagining and a deadspot in the sound stage dead center.  It was truely a chest tightening delight, I think I understand why Mr. Klipsch spent the rest of his career trying to make orchestral music come a live with high sensitivy speakers.  Holy nuts.

Further heavy metal - I enjoyed my favorite songs by avenged sevenfold nightmare and hail to the king, and a few other songs.  I believe it was in nightmare that there is a sequence of wooden blocks that went progressed from the lower left floor to the upper right ceiling as my heavy metal listening progressed the muscle spasms spread throughout the body beyond the middle back, and curled my toes and stomach in an almost lurrid manner.  I think I will have to make a confession to my wife, and hope she is understanding.

All that said, these speakers require a subwoofer, as there is NOTHING below 100hz based upon my measurements.  But the good news is to integrate them into the sub was basically turn the internal crossover all the way up and adjust the volume.  Outside of that, flat as a table up until 15K hz or so but some of the over that is probably due to less than ideal microphone placement for measurements.

At least in this inital 4 hours of playback I think there is some harshness of a certain type of symbols.  The ones that are kind of small and crash into each other based upon a foot pedal.  The other ones are fine.  Not sure if that is just my hearing, poor recordings, or speaker break in.  Could be anything.

But in any case, I haven't had a musical experience like that since I was a teenager, or sober enough to remember anyway.

Those are my first impressions.

That's awesome! It is such a great feeling when a new piece of gear takes the music to the next level. And I assume it will only get better as the drivers get some more hours on them.

After playing for awhile I measured them again, and the high end popped in.  Still nothing below a 100hz.  So a Sub is required.

I am going to get a pair of harrison labs high pass filters to put in line so they aren't trying and failing to play the low notes anyway.

At some point I may spring for a nice active crossover.  A vintage pioneer D70 looks pretty cool.

FWIW,  I integrated two subs with my Zu Union 6 speakers using an analog unit from Sublime Acoustics.  They make two models that are reasonably priced and offer lots of flexibility with crossover frequencies to match your mains speakers. Their units also employ a baffle step compensation EQ which is also really nice. This crossover didn't add any perceptible noise or contribute to a loss of resolution. In fact, it improved the high frequency resolution of the Zu.
