Anyone Have Experience with UPS Lost Package?

A few weeks ago, Ed announced in our classifieds the sale of HRv1 Speakers as part of the Weiss Estate sale. I have always been interested in these speakers, but the retail cost, especially for the new HRv2 version, was beyond my current budget. This offering was doable, so I contacted Ed and bought them. BTW, Ed was great to work with, and I think he may have one additional speaker pair as part of the estate sale, but I digress.

Last Thursday, a speaker was delivered. That's right, just one speaker. The other speaker, according to UPS, seems to be lost.  I spent most of the day on Friday learning the ins and outs of communicating (or not) with UPS. Finally, after connecting with a human instead of a computer, I made some progress. A live assistant was able to pass information on to UPS's "Package Investigation Department," which is now handling my case. I hope to contact the Package Investigation Department tomorrow. I may not, however, be able to reach them directly; apparently, they do not deal directly with customers.

It occurred to me that some people in the Decware community may have had experience with UPS and lost packages. If so, please comment and share your ideas that you think might help. I learned, for example, not to use the generic UPS phone number but instead to use another number that I obtained from AI: 877.289.6418. This number ultimately led to speaking with a representative from UPS. Without that piece of information, I would still be at square one.

Firstly, sorry to hear that. I had two speakers that were dropped off at the same time and place take two different paths to my house and arrive on different days, but they both arrived.

Was the shipment insured? Many years ago I had a lost UPS shipment and while the details are fuzzy, possibly repressed due to trama, my interaction was making a claim and waiting for what seemed like an unreasonably long time for UPS to "investigate." Then I got a check. I was the sender and I was the one who needed to file the claim.

Hi Tony, Sorry to hear of your shipping woes…no fun to experience.  A couple of years ago I bought a pair of used Ohm Walsh Tall 2000’s.  They were packed in 3 boxes.  Each speaker and the square grill covers.  The speakers arrived one day apart and the grills were delayed several days.  We filed a  lost claim after a few days.  No communication but they arrived a few days later.  Sometimes it just takes a few days to get re-routed. Don’t give up hope.   I think it is best to ship each box separate so you get separate tracking numbers for each box to avoid multiple box pitfalls.  That’s what I do now.

Bummer, Tony. Sorry to hear that. I’ve had a few “lost” packages over the years but they eventually have shown up. I hope your experience in this situation is the same. If not, hopefully the insurance works in your favor… one speaker certainly isn’t much use on its own.

Hoping this works out for you. I’m betting the slightly lower efficiency of the HRv2’s will be a positive change for you. It’s always cool when your gear comes with a story, too!

Hey guys, thanks for your well wishes. I'm dealing with UPS and the lost speaker. If you have dealt directly with UPS for a missing package, it can be a challenging process. Friday was most confusing, but today it looks better. A formal investigation has begun. Hopefully, within the next two weeks, I will receive word and proceed from there.

I insured each speaker. Still, what does one do with a single speaker if I have to go that route? It's good to know that those of you who have been in this situation before had it work out successfully. I am encouraged by that. The Berkeley UPS person advised meditating on the package, visualizing it encircled by white light, which helps. In Berkeley, that makes total sense. Smiley

Tony, I hope the package gets located and arrives in good shape. In about the last 3 years, we've never seen mail outfits USPS/FEDEX/UPS and Amazon deliveries this screwed up. Most recently, it's been USPS. I have called our local post office over in town here and they are absolutely wonderful people. Been dealing / know them for many many years now. When I call telling her  (THE boss) that one of our packages is again going in huge circles.... again, I can just see her eyes rolling...  [smiley=50.gif] No doubt she gets calls like this quite a bit. This last package wound up in New Jersey after Billings got hold of it..AGAIN! Cheesy  Billings is just east of us. She always calls back and takes care of the problem. Small town folks. Our main mail problem seems to be a staffing problem out of Billings Montana. Apparently, few people want to work over there? A well paid job/ benefits and trouble finding people? Things sure have got ridiculous. Embarrassing really. What happened to people who were not afraid of work ....and take pride in it? Well, 'things' sure are different. No excuse for most of this crap. Goes for your mail issue as well Tony. It's well known that mail theft has increased off of the charts too. Well looky there, my rant for the day. Time for me to go back outside....where I belong.. Smiley   Back inside later today with some music playing. Our Zen amp still going just like new~ LOVE IT!!! Take care all~ Mike  edit: rolling a couple of 6sn7 tubes. NICE!  Oh..and ever notice you don't see dust until you take pictures?

I'm in a situation right now with USPS.

I ordered a CD a month or so ago, a pre order, signed edition.
It shipped from Ypsilanti Mi last Thursday, 6/12.
Ypsilanti is 400 miles from my place here by Decatur Il.
The first day it shipped down to the St. Louis sorting area, 100 miles south of me.
Fine, I understand that is the closest major sorting center.
Then it rattled around St. Louis until 6/17, then shipped to Omaha NE. 400 miles north and west of St. Louis.
I think that they might have a logistics problem. That might be part of the reason that they are going broke.

I ordered some speaker parts from Parts Express in Ohio, basically the same 400 miles, on Monday 6/16 with UPS normal shipping and they were delivered this morning, 6/18.
That is the service I expect.

I hope you get your speaker. Unfortunately the SF/OAK/Richmond shipping hubs have a deep history of package theft. I deal with a seller that eventually refused to ship anything to northern CA if thats the destination.

I just took a look at the date when I started this thread and was surprised to see that it's just been two weeks.  It seems much longer than that - I know I have aged another year since dealing with UPS.

The bottom line is that UPS has concluded the speaker is officially lost, and they have no idea what happened to it. At the end of last week, UPS said my reimbursement check was in the mail. I should feel good about that, but I will wait to see if that's the case. I'm not being overly pessimistic, but with every step forward with UPS, there's been another step back.

I'm fortunate to have purchased insurance, but that only covers one speaker. Losing one negates the other, so unless I can find a match for the one that did arrive, I have lost them both.

I have talked with Bob Ziegler of Turning Point Audio, who designed these speakers, and he has come up with a few ideas that I can further explore. He may know someone who has one speaker, which might lead to a solution. It may take time to find a replacement, but it's worth the effort.

If anyone knows someone in a similar situation to mine, let me know.

Bummer Tony!
I had a recent similar incident with FedEx. Two identical amps shipped in two identical boxes came damaged. The boxes were intact but distorted and one box looked to have split at the corner from impact. It was taped shut by the carrier. All contents were still in that box. There was slight damage to the amps. Both worked when assembled.
The thing is, it would be hard to collect on insurance in my case being both boxes arrived. The carrier would just blame it on how it was packed that caused the damage.

Exactly. When you buy insurance from a shipper it is for loss, not damage. You package could be completely crushed but as long as they deliver it you don't have an insurance claim. Ask me how I know this .

Tony, you're living my nightmare. I'm very sorry and I hope you can update this thread soon with a solution you've found.

Thanks, guys, for your support and well wishes. I'm still a week to 10 days from receiving a check from UPS, but at the moment, I want to believe that it is indeed in the mail as I was told. I will see and let you know the outcome.

In the meantime, my search for a possible single HR-1 continues. It is a long shot, but it is the best-hoped-for option at this time.
