Paint used on the black boxes?
06/28/23 at 16:16:07

I've reached out via the contact form a few weeks ago, and still waiting, but thought I'd ask here to see if anyone knows what specific paint is used on the zstage, zrock, zmc, etc? I'm hoping to get some spray paint that would match perfectly to cover up some light scratches. Any help is appreciated.

A black magic marker is easy to try and comes off easily if you want to remove it with a little rubbing alcohol.  May not be the best fix, but its probably the easiest and cheapest.

Figured I would add what I've discovered along the way and see if it resonates with anyone.

I was looking at some product pages and saw that the SE84CKC  -  2013 ~ 2015 was changed, "paint was upgraded again to a 1930's typewriter finish". https://www.decwareproducts.com/se84ufo

That got me looking into typewriter finishes. This one is looking pretty close but missing some metallic that I see in my decware boxes when the sun hits them.https://www.mmsmilkpaint.shop/products/typewriter-milkpaint

Anyway, just wanted to share in case anyone else is wanting to know or offer insight.

It is a powder coat textured finish.  It really can't be touched up with paint.  If you can post a picture of the scratches they may be in fact polish marks that are smoother and shinier than the regular finish, thus appearing like scratches.  If so those can be de-glossed with acetone and a cotton swab and made to visually disappear.

Thanks for the reply, Steve. Attached are some pics. Depending on the light they can either be hard to see or very obvious.

Thanks for the acetone suggestion.

This is what Google said to do.

Can you get scratches out of powder coat?
Clean up damaged area with wet cloth and then a dry cloth. Apply heat to damaged area with heat gun or a flame torch. As heat is applied, the plastic will begin to melt and smooth out to the original surface. Continue to smooth the surface by applying heat and stop when you are satisfied with the surface finish.

It sounds dicey but plausible.

I've watched the process before, spray on a positively charged powder onto a grounded piece and then heat in a oven.

Heat can be your friend, or possibly enemy.

Thanks for the picture. Those are marks that polished the surface to a higher sheen.  They can be blended away with the cotton swab and acetone.  Then when they are all 'erased' you can clean the whole surface with mineral spirits and once that dries you can polish it with some wax.  Alternately you can send it to me and I'll do it for you.

Powder coating provides a textured appearance.  Painting won't help much, if at all.  Polish marks, which are smoother and shinier than the typical finish, might easily be mistaken for scratches, therefore posting a picture of them would be helpful.  If that's the case, a little de-glossing with some acetone and a cotton swab should do the trick.

The acetone and mineral spirits worked perfectly. You can't even tell it ever had marks.
