Room Treatment Completed - For Now
12/23/22 at 17:16:41

After 18 months, I have completed my listening room treatment.  It's a process, so there may never be a final version, but I am finished for now.

Acquiring the audio equipment (amp, pre-amp, ZBIT, ZRock, etc.) has been a labor of love, and I sincerely appreciate the help and guidance I have received from so many Decware-oriented people.

Merry Christmas, happy holidays and best wishes for a sonically outstanding 2023!

I was re-routed here from JazzToGo's thread...  I don't see any photos anymore?
I've been interested in what GIK has to offer vs. my current treatment and would like to see more of your results.  Thanks!

Thanks, Tony! I don’t know why but the images do not show on my desktop but do appear on my phone.
I recently removed the absorption on my front wall and am very pleased with the results. I have diffusion in the center and it made such a huge difference. I think my next step will be adding more diffusion on either side behind the speakers.
I am thinking to put the absorbers that I took down on the ceiling but from what I have seen GIK uses thicker absorbers on the ceiling (mine are only 2 inch).  I will reach out to them and inquire.
Great looking space, by the way. It looks very inviting.

Hey Tony, have you made any changes or additions to your room treatments?  Are you happy with the GIK products and services?

As I begin my journey with my UFO25, I recognize the very next thing I need to do is treat my really weird basement listening space.  I’m really interested in the GIK products and they seem much more affordable than other systems I’ve looked at.

I'd be interested in an update on this as well. Nice listening space.

I can speak to my experience with GIK products. I'll start by saying that if you can treat your room, do it. It will make a big difference. No matter which products you go with, it's worth putting as much as feasible.

Obviously the GIK products are not Acoustic Fields quality (like GroovySauce and others have) or the DIY excellence of RedPillSanctuary (aka Paul) but it does the job in my small, dedicated room (12x14x10). I have a combination of GIK and Acoustimac products. I have both absorption and diffusion panels as well as some corner traps. The quality is good from both companies, but prices have risen about 25% since I bought some of my first panels. I have over 20 panels of various sizes and depths and the room is still very much alive.

If you can do what Paul did with DIY, you can save a lot. There was a lot of effort there and a lot of expertise involved. If you can afford the Acoustic Fields products, then you're going with the top of the line, but you need to dedicate a lot of space in your room to them. In my smallish room I couldn't afford to give up that much space. The pre-fab'd panels were my next best option.

I have a combination of absorption, diffusion, and some wall art panels from GIK and I'm happy with them. I'm also happy with the Acoustimac absorption panels I have. I'd recommend putting in as many panels as you can since I don't think you can overdo it to any great extent. (I mean within reason for the room). The result I achieved was well worth it. I balanced my approach with aesthetics in mind as well.
The sound is now crisp and clean without any unwanted artifacts and really lets the soundstage and the Decware equipment shine. Of course, everything else matters, like speaker placement, quality source, etc.

The only issue I couldn't go after was the extreme low frequencies. This really should be addressed because it is the foundation for everything else, but I just didn't have the space for such deep panels. I would have needed panels that were at least 6" to 12" deep. Even without the low absorption panels I still achieved a very nice sounding room. It works well since I don't listen at very loud levels (max 82db roughly and not often) so the lows are not a big problem (although on some tracks it could really help). Still, I'd like to address the lows anyway, maybe in the future in another room.

I look forward hearing any updates from Tony if he has time.

Happy listening and good luck with your room treatments.

I appreciate your advice regarding the GIK products MrChip!  I have a large room that is open to other parts of the basement so space isn’t an issue so I’m leaning toward addressing the lowest frequencies first based on what I’m learning about room treatments.

I haven’t heard of Acoustimac so I’ll be looking them over as well.  I’m not a woodworker but I think I’m going to look around for one in my area and see if I might be able to have some diffusers built locally which would save my wallet.  I know I need to do something!

Hey guys, my room treatment now is the same as you see in these pictures. Over time, I had forgotten the pre-room treatment, but looking at the post was a fun reminder.

I have two listening areas: primary upstairs and secondary downstairs. Downstairs, there is no room treatment. It might not be a fair comparison between the two rooms, but SQ in the well-treated room is remarkably better, as you would expect.

Initially, I worked with a company based in Florida that specializes in room treatment and SQ. They were okay, but the folks at GIK Acoustics were significantly better in terms of knowledge, assistance, and the quality of their products. Most of everything in the pictures came from them.

The base traps, located in the corners and the coverings of the windows and door, contributed most to the improved sound quality in the room. Let me know if you have a specific question.

I had forgotten that there was a picture of my old cat, "Chunk"; she passed away last December at the age of 24. The chair she is in is the room's listening chair, which she regularly would claim as her spot.

Thanks for the update Tony!  Do you have base traps and/or any treatments in the back of the room behind your listening position?  I know each room is different but the examples I see, particularly on the GIK website, show bass traps in all four corners as well as acoustic panels on the back wall.  I’ve reached out to them and asked for an assessment so it’ll be interesting to read what they suggest.

Bluzrover, check out the pictures in this section: Room Treatment Completed - For Now - I think that's what you're asking. Let me know if you mean something else.

Tony,
Thanks for giving us an update.
Glad to hear that the treatment worked out well and is still helping to provide great sound. Looks like a great space to immerse yourself in.

Sorry to hear about Chunk. That was a long life. I'm sure you both had some great listening sessions along the way. Nice memories for sure.

Bluzrover,
I think your idea of finding a woodworker to make some quadratic diffusers is a great one. I mentioned that I had diffusion, but I should have said that I have some GIK absorbers with the scatter plate to be more exact. They act like diffusers to some extent but are not as good as quadratic diffusers. If you can have some made and applied strategically in your room, that will make a world of difference.

Also, as far as treatments on the back wall go, if you have at least 4 to 5 feet of space behind you to the wall, then a diffusor should work well. If you only have a few feet behind your listening position, then absorbers would probably work better. Of course, every room is different, and your basement space sounds unique so you will probably have many options. I have corner bass traps in the 4 corners of my room (not floor to ceiling though) with the 2 front ones having scatter plates behind the fabric. The last thing I have yet to do is put 2 panels on the ceiling (one above each speaker location) to complete the vision I had. I hope to finish that within the next few weeks. To be honest, I don't expect that to be night and day, but I do expect it to complement the rest and achieve the best sounding room I could come up with (barring of course a full complement of Acoustic Fields panels lol!)

I think you'll find that spending a modest amount of money can achieve a really good sounding room and it's what Decware components or any quality component really, deserves and what allows those components to really show you what they're capable of.

Good luck and have fun with it.
