let’s try this again: does the unit look good in all black? or does it look better with a contrasting color other than a black base?

Nice show of thick skin, Gary Roman. We like to make our jokes.

I have had all black gear for so long, I now lean toward light colors, even white. Light wood accents, even better.
Did I have too much black? I don't know, but I don't think like that.

It all comes down to what you prefer. No one can stop you, any way you go.

I might try to match or contrast woods. In other words, if you have walnut speakers, you could stick with a walnut theme or try light maple or white oak for a base as a nice contrast.

There's a reason you ask the question and I'm not sure I know why yet.
What would you prefer? The only opinion that really matters is yours.

If you close your eyes while you listen (which I confess I do more than on occasion) it all "looks" the same! Okay, bad joke.

I particularly like the walnut base with the matte black top plates of Decware components. Great look! I have maple veneered speakers (HR-1), a Mapleshade Audio Samson V. 3 rack which is 2" maple shelves with "silver" threaded rod and brass nuts, and black and silver other components besides my Decware amps, and my red ZTPRE. It all looks good, it all looks good together.

In another system I have a Taboo Mk IV that Bob outfitted with an exceptionally nice walnut base--it has a burled look to it that when I look at it I remember pipes that my great-uncle Suds (Arvin Selquist) used to smoke. And it makes me happy. It's the only walnut base I've seen like it--it's the luck of the draw.

It's all a matter of what you want and what is available.

Thanks for the (non-snarkly) replies.
In fact, my pending order is for a walnut base. When I asked Decware if there was an option for anything other than a black face plate, I was not there is not, but that black/black was a nice look.
I think I’ll stick with the walnut base, espectially since that will match my speakers…unless someone who has the black base talks me into it Smiley

It’s in the eye of the beholder.

That means you.

That said, whatever you do, don’t blank up and get stupid crazy stuff because you’ll make it difficult to sell down the road. Always buy with an eye on likely selling it later. You might say you’ll never sell, but you’ll eventually make a liar out of yourself.

Btw, what the hell is wrong with a snarky reply???

Hi Gary,

You asked above:

......does the unit look good in all black? Or does it look better with a contrasting color other than a black base?

No, an all-black base is ugly.  Seriously.

I purchased a third-hand (absolutely fantastic) CSP 2+ with a black base from a Decware member. The first thing I did was order a replacement base in walnut.

Tony

A black base can be rectified with a can of Krylon paint.

Mine is safety red.

Donnie, you painted your Torii safety red? It would be interesting to see a photo.

Parroting Brad here, Donnie. Very nice speakers. Fill us in on what you’ve got going on with that open baffle there.

Manny,

I built the open baffles years ago with virtually no tools and a whole lot of enthusiasm.

They have a Tang-Band 8" full ranger and 2 Eminence 15" Alpha's in each speaker. The Alpha's are stacked with one behind the other, each on a separate baffle.

They seem to work pretty good, though it seems like I never play them anymore. I probably need to give them to someone who will use them.

Here is a older picture of them in their full glory.

Donnie, wow they look real damned nice!! Good on you for tackling the challenge.

What don’t you like so much that you don’t listen with them anymore?

Brad,

It isn't that I don't like my open baffles, it is that I'm constantly building new speakers and playing with them.

Right now I'm listening to a new pair of "Double Rockers" that I built last weekend. Later on today those will come out so that I can sand and paint them. Maybe I will stick the open baffles back in, but I might stick my Koa speakers in, or something else that I have sitting around.

Too many choices!

I have promised the open baffles to someone if I ever decided to get rid of them. Hopefully he will be at the 'Fest so that I can ask him if he still wants them.

Hey Donnie,

That’s fascinating. And good on you for giving those very cool speakers away to a good home.
