Going along with the theme of drastic moments of near panic and a simple solution, I get stuff warming last night and come back in about ten minutes to find my right channel is not working. I'm running two SE84Cs in mono.
So, I glance at my tubes, glowing in comfort and I begin at the beginning, yep all my switches are on, all my power cables seem fine, no one has kicked a speaker cable loose, etc.
I can certainly identify with the level of anxiety you went through. But like the old saying, when you're going through Hell, keep going, don't stop!
Turns out I had not checked ALL my tubes for glow as well as I should have. One of my rectifier tubes was NOT glowing, after further inspection.
So a simple fix, indeed. But I feel like I dodged a bullet!
A tube that I fortunately had several to spare was the problem. Sylvania 5Y3GT/G which I bought several from someone's classified ad here many years ago, kind of as spares, saved the day.
Now I wonder if the heater circuit failing is a common thing with this particular tube or maybe this is a precurser to further panic down the line.
Only other time I've had a tube just fail to start was an input tube ages ago.
Just one iffy tube, I hope!
