A bit of useless information...
10/23/21 at 16:20:53

So yesterday I ordered a pair of Lii F15 drivers.
I just needed to share that with "someone"!

:-)

I intend to build a pair of "modified" Betsy's due to size constraints in my listening room, about 26"h x 19" max wide 6/4 thickness in cherry wood, not sure of the curvature I will use.

I am considering tilting the baffles by about 3 degrees, this due to a thread suggesting that people put little spikes under the front of the baffles to achieve the same.
Thoughts?

Am I delusional thinking I have the skills to build such baffles?

My UFO2 is at 645 on the list, the excitement is now physically palpable.

Cheers,

a.

I've never played with the tilt angle but I used feet on the front of mine that allow adjustment.  I used Steve's angle which is in the 5 degree range.  You'd have to go over his Big Betsy thread to find the exact angle he used.

You aren't delusional about building some.
Just measure and cut.
Sanding can cover a multitude of sins.

I just stick a book under the front of a speaker when I'm trying to figure out if it needs tilt or not. You could do that to figure out what tilt that you need.

That gave me such a big smile!  I know that feeling.

"Am I delusional thinking I have the skills to build such baffles?"

You will build them and they will be great.  This will give you the building bug causing you to make a cabinet speaker. That will go well and so you will then build a complicated cabinet, probably a horn.

Welcome to the Machine.  Stole that from Pink Floyd.

Coyote,

While it may seem intimidating, it’s not that bad.  Measure twice….cut once!  When I was in college, I couldn’t afford to buy a powered car sub for my old hatchback.  With some planning and the information on the speaker specs, I took on the project.  The outcome was better than expected cosmetically, but the sound was phenomenal.

Once I am back in my house and things settle and I am definitely going to take on building a pair of the OB’s.  I say go for it!!

Haha,

Thank you all!

Adjustable legs interesting...
Buying the Lii was just so curious a feeling.
It was committing to the project!

I think it might be an excuse to buy more tools Wink

Building these was deceptively complicated.  I think what made it a challenge was working with such big, heavy slabs of wood.  It's straight forward but time and care in setting up of cuts is crucial.  A powerful router and good bits will help a lot.  I think Steve posted some video of his build.  Even if you don't do it the same, he has some good techniques to follow.

Just another thought.

You may want to “practice” on some cheaper wood/mdf prior to starting on the cherry. That’s what I did when I made my Betsy & Bucks. Making and practicing with the arc cutting and circle cutting jigs is very helpful (and confidence boosting).

Good advice.  I always have to remind myself which direction to go when inside and outside of a jig.  Clockwise when outside and counterclockwise when inside -- I think!  lol

CJ,

That is indeed good advice.

Thx
