New DAC for Decware SE84UFO2 + Trepezium
08/16/21 at 22:33:17

Hello gents,

My WA7 Fireflies Dac just died and I need to replace it for the office setup using the SE84UFO2 + Trapezium.

I'm debating between the MHDT LAB DACS Orchid vs the BORDERPATROL DAC? Similar prices, one has tube for the output and the other for the power supply.

Anyone had the chance to try those dacs? Which ones would be best fit to work with my current setup?

Let me know. With love,
Sev

I wonder if this will cause problem :

The BorderPatrol DAC SE's maximum output level at 1kHz was 1.87V, which is 0.6dB lower than the CD standard's 2V. The output impedance was very high, at 2.3k ohms at 1 and 20kHz, rising to 5.8k ohms at 20Hz. This DAC needs to be used with a preamplifier having an input impedance of 50k ohms or higher if the low frequencies are not to sound lightweight.

Perhaps a ZSTAGE is in your future.

I have one and would not be without it.

There is a digital forum here that might be useful for you as well as your research elsewhere.  At least here you can hear from Decware amp owners on their DAC pairings.

Borderpatrol SEi works excellent w/ CSP2 and 341.5 alone or in combination w/each. Can’t speak to the Orchid.

I can't compare it to the Orchid but I have the Border Patrol DAC and like it a lot. I use a Stage and a ZRock with it.

I'm running the MHDT Orchid dac directly into the SE84UFO with the WE 396a D getter tube.  What I'm reading is that with an adapter I can run the 6922 that is also the same tube used on t WE84UFO and get even better sound.

I think it sounds great but have not heard the Border Patrol.

Haven't done a direct comparison with other DACs but when listening to other digital systems they seem to be missing something.

I'm saving for a capacitor upgrade to make it even better

I just watched a review of Border Patrol DAC by Steve Guttenberg that was just released today called "BorderPatrol DAC vs. Denafrips Ares, VERY different!"  If interested, check it out at:
