Today's Listening Appointment...

Today I got to entertain a new guest in the Decware listening room... A friend of a customer who came to compare the TORII JRv2 vs. the TORII JR hum levels on high efficiency speakers...  and while doing so introduce Decware to his friend. I selected the Zen Master Series ZF15L baffles because of their 100dB sensitivity ensures that if there is any hum you will clearly hear it.

As expected the new TORII JRv2 was quieter than the original.  Both sounded great.  We spun some vinyl, the sound was lush.

Then the original Torii Jr owner decided to demonstrate the SE84UFO which was only 2 watts to his friend...  of course the expectation was that things would get smaller, quieter, softer... but nothing really changed.  At least from my perspective. In fact I thought the bass got considerably better.  Certainly there was no difference in volume or hit.

Now here's the fun part...

When these speakers are out of phase in the listening room, the phase of the bass out in the adjacent work space is nearly in perfect phase. The sound is rather glorious actually out there.

So I was enjoying the shit out of the sound of the SE84UFO on these speakers tonight as I work on the computer in the adjacent workspace until it got so good I couldn't stand it anymore and I had to grab the phone and record it for a video which I did. Problem is that as soon as I went into the room and got between the speakers, there was ZERO bass.

I kept waiting, but nope, something is really wrong here. There is no bass. No image. Well there actually is an image, but it's just not right. So I killed the video, and checked the connections on the amp and as expected one of the channels was accidentally hooked up out-of-phase.

I don't know what it is about demos, and Father Murphy's out of phase trick. It's about as immature as laughing at fart jokes. I wish he would grow up.

In any case, I fixed the phase, and can only hope the new guest will return some day to hear it sound right, or watch these videos with a pair of headphones...

BTW, FWIW...

I have started what will be a long journey of speaker demos which will eventually include every speaker we offer including DIY stuff.  So with that premise, if you don't already have passible headphones, a pair of Beyer Dynamics DT 770 PRO 250 Ohm headphones plugged directly into the headphone jack of your MAC or PC or TABLET or PHONE could easily save you a trip here to listen in person.  Will it sound as good, no.  But the majority of the recordings are done with a simple phone so that you have a common frame of reference.  By that I mean, if you were to take your Galaxy Note 9 or similar device and record your speakers and room and then listen to that on headphones, you could directly compare what you hear with these videos and hear what is different/possible.  The cost of those particular headphones is less than $200.

Also, these videos all go onto youtube as well.  That's the best place to find all of our videos in one place.
