DM 947 room setup
07/31/18 at 00:57:09

I’m looking for help. How do you DM947 owners have your speakers set up in your room? My room is 13 x 17 with sloped ceiling that runs the long way of the room. 8’ to 10’ with 2’ flat in middle.  This room opens up into a dining area and kitchen with 8’ ceiling. The kitchen/dining area extends another 15’ behind the listening area. The speakers are set up opposite end of room from kitchen, facing the kitchen.

I have the speakers on sliders so I can move them around easily to try to find the best placement.  The best place so far is 32” from front wall and 26” from side walls. They are toed in about 20 degrees or so.

I’ve just started with room treatment. I have a bass trap in each front corner from the floor halfway up. I’ll get panels to run all the way to the ceiling next. Also, I have a double window on the front wall that I have curtain on for absorption.

My listening position is about 8’ away from the speakers, and the speakers are 7’ apart. I have not been able to position them to my satisfaction yet.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Geno

Geno,  My room is 11' w x 16' d x 8' h.  DM's set 5' from from wall and 30" from side wall (measurements are to center of drivers). Speakers shooting down the 16' room depth. Toe in is 1/4" to 1/2".  I sit approx 8" to 1' further back from what would be the exact triangular spot. I've played with position, on and off, for 3+ years. So, keep at it. As I've added diffusers and absorbers speaker position has been tweaked. Room is sounding great right now so I haven't touched anything for months. That may change when UFO25 arrives.

Hi Ace.  1/4” to 1/2” toe in?  You mean they are almost facing straight ahead?  Thanks, Geno

Yes, they are basically facing straight ahead firing into absorbers and diffusers on back wall.  I've tried various degrees of toe in and this works best in my little room. At least best to my ears!

How is the wall behind your speakers treated - corners, directly behind and between speakers?  First reflection points also?

Hey Geno,  Will try to make this make sense.
All items are 2' x 4' except corner bass traps (some of the PI Audio panels are 2' x 2' but overall they equal 4ea 2' x 4' positive wells + ditto negative wells) note Each PI audio diffusor comes as a positive and negative - I have all the positive panels on front and side walls. Negative panels on back wall.

GIK Tri-trap corner bass traps - front wall corners (behind spkrs)
2 PI Audio Group -"AQD" diffusers - on front wall between spkrs
2 DIY 6" thk absorbers - front wall outside the PI diffusers.

2 GIK 244 Bass traps - side wall 1st reflection of closest spkr
2 PI   - side wall - 1st reflection of farthest spkr

2 GIK Monster Bass Traps - centered on back wall
3 PI   on outside of GIKs - and 1 PI above GIKs

Hope that all makes sense to you!

Thanks for the detailed response Ace!  That will really help me as I continue adding treatment.

I have tweaked my speaker positioning, and I think I am close to where I need to be.

Hey Geno,
How goes the monolith tweaking?
And.... any room treatments to date?

Hi Ace.  I'm just seeing your post.

The Monoliths are sounding really great. I moved them all over the place before i finally decided on the best spot. I am very happy now.

Room treatment will end up being a little further down the road.  I have been adding equipment upgrades.  Thanks to Jeff of A, I recently added a ZDSD, and, just today, bought a ZROCK2 from him.

I still have a few cables to upgrade - then will start back on the room treatments.

Nice! So what speaker placement did you end up with? (Example: 5' from front wall and 3' from side wall 1" toe in).  What are your room dimensions?
P.S. your gonna love that Zrock2. It's one of the best upgrades I've made.

The speakers ended up 28" from the front wall, and 25" from the side walls.  Just over 7' center to center. Toe in is about 3".

My listening position is 9' away.  Just not able to try near-field in my listening room as it is my living room.

I am looking forward to the improvements that better interconnect cables and room treatments will make. I am using Mapleshade double helix plus speaker cable, and love it.

Hmmm that close to front wall must be giving you some nice thumpin' bass! Enjoy!
