Are you certain you did not flip the + and - wires leading to the left binding post?  Ohm meter can verify this.

Found the problem. Some of the volume pot wires were mixed up. Now? Holy crap, these things are glorious. Silent, clear; sound amazing with my 93db (6 ohm) ESS AMT-1a pyramid speakers.
