RCA 5814A (12AU7) NOS 3 mica-ideal for ZP3
08/31/13 at 15:43:03

I have a RCA 5814A(12AU7) new in Military box, to sell.

This white labeled 3 mica tube (very low microphonics) has a pack date of July 1957 on the original military box, but the tube itself was made the 35th week of 1956.

With 2200 being new, it measures at 2100/2200, a close match between the sections.  It sounds like a vintage Mullard with rich warmth and wide bandwidth, but it has better detail. It's ideal for use in the buffer tube section of the Decware ZP3.

I have three, so I'm keeping two and selling one.  The price for this single NOS 12AU7 in original box military, is $25.00.  This includes First class Mail shipping.

Payment by Paypal, returns accepted.

Thanks for looking!
Mike

Mike,

Sounds like something I would like in the Zstage.

If not sold, I would like it.

Thanks,

Will

I bet you'd enjoy it. The best tube I've found so far in the ZStage is a clear top RCA.

I bet I will like it too Lon.

The RCAs I have I really like. Actually, since I got Jupiter caps in the Zstage, I like all the 12AU7s I have....different flavors of good. It is all so variable, depending on context, especially with the bias on the Zstage in the equation.

I tend to think of the cleartop I have as a bit off balance. More a good option in certain circumstances rather than a fav...slightly lean and open upper mids, warmish in the middle, good, warmish bass, and a touch flat feeling dynamically. Or perhaps better put, a bit punched up in the upper mids. I prefer a couple other RCAs...One is a 12AU7 with long black plates and a large top D getter. The other has long grey plates with a medium/large hallow getter, labeled 5963. Both seem more dimensional, atmospheric, and textural...still clear, warmish and deep. The earlier black plate is warmer, and the grey plate 5963 bigger, more open and a bit more dynamic feeling.

But then, they are all good.

Right, I think the beeswax caps likely let you hear all that they can be, that's the case with tubes in my Torii now that I have those caps in.

I would say that this clear top probably exhibits those characteristics and they are probably just the right characteristics to complement the Marantz AV preamp/tuner I'm using it with, which is not a neutral beast. Smiley Pretty soon I'll move the ZStage into storage and put my trusty old CSP2 in place, very interested to see what that does to that system (I anticipate a great synergy).
