great article on music and 3D sound

"Of all the amazing things the mind does, the most amazing may be that it can take sound and turn it into music, and then take music and turn it into meaning." Opening quote of a fascinating article in the Jan 28, 2013 New Yorker magazine by Adam Gopnik.
IMHO great read that people on this forum would really enjoy.

Sounds like an interesting article. Fits right in with my recent thoughts over on head-fI, where there is frequent anxiety and rancourous argument about any possible imperfection in the equipment...

When one considers the brains ability to fully extract meaning in the presence of quite large amounts of 'noise', most of the obsessing seems pointless.

Of course a certain level of equipment is needed, but once past this level it would be like saying one can't fully understand information on a page because the paper it's printed on is slightly blemished!

Yeah definitely check it out...speaks about perspective and how we all perceive music in so many ways  and all are valid.  The author doesn't understand how his kids listen to ipods etc and they dont want to understand dad's tube amp.   The scientific idea of a "sweetspot" is then discussed where a scientist suggests placing a mattress spaced equally between speakers and leaning your forehead against it so each ear hears a specific side/channel "only" (i have not tried this).  This scientist says he has found the sweetspot but at his home has a real cheap turntable next to his bed because for him it's not the songs but the memories associated with them...

That seems similar to another post on this forum wherein a listener is advised to put a wall or some other barrier between each speaker.
