It might be fun to recommend musical titles. . . .

Or maybe not. But I do recommend titles to friends, and I have friends here, so I'd like to extend a recommendation to my favorite new recording of this year, which deserves to be "better known."

It is the latest release from Cassandra Wilson, "Another Country" which features songs she has written on the guitar (something new for her) and features the guitar work of Fabrizio Sotti. The only song that is not an original composition is a very interesting rendition of "O Sole Me O" believe it or not. Sparsely arranged with most tracks being two guitars and bass and a few with percussion.

This album has just sunken under my skin. I like to listen to it, I like to play guitar along with it (badly), and I've shared it with friends. I bought several copies as Christmas gifts. Mellow, warmly recorded, played and sung with heart.

If this looks or sounds vaguely interesting to you, this is worth seeking out.

Anyone else have a new release that has really been a big time-grabber?

I think you'll like this one, it's less varied than New Moon Daughter, less "jazz" and just a very nice listen, positive and warm. She's really become a great singer in my opinion.

I have so many favorite recordings and really don't view them as "top 10" etc. but here are some I would not want to be without:

John Coltrane "Crescent"
Miles Davis "Bitches Brew"
Grant Green "Idle Moments"
Paul Kantner and Jefferson Starship (Planet Earth Orchestra) "Blows Against the Empire"
Arthur Rubenstien "Chopin: Ballades"
Duke Ellington "Indigos"
"Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy"
Grateful Dead "Wake of the Flood"
Ed Motta "Dwitza"
Antonio Carlos Jobim "Inedito"
Jimi Hendrix "Band of Gypsys"
Charles Mingus "East Coasting"

Great idea Lon.  I have really been enjoying Greg Brown and his wife Iris DeMent's individual albums that have recently come out.

Ok after reading posts for the past year, I have to chime in on this one. In no particular order and changing depending on the  mood and day.
Pink Floyd-Ummagumma
Fleetwood Mac- Then Play on
Mahavishnu Orchestra- First Three Albums
ZZ Top- First Two albums
REM- Monster
Miles Davis- Another vote for Bitches Brew...heard it for the first time last year when I went to strictly Analog...blew me away!
Porcupine Tree- sorry can't pick just one
Procol Harum- Grand Hotel
Vangelis- Heaven and Hell
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds- Murder Ballads

John, welcome, thanks for posting and please keep it up!

I envy you hearing Bitches Brew for the first time a  year ago. I've been listening to it since '72 or so. . . and it still can put me in a trance!

I like Porcupine Tree too, well at least those from Signify and up. Not as much a fan of the earlier stuff.

Lon, thank you for the welcome. I'm a Decware owner and fan, but I appreciate the music more than the equipment and can't figure it out for the most part anyway! I noticed you had Blows against the Empire on your list...also one of my favorites along with Crown of Creation and After Bathing at Baxters.
Forgot to put one on the original list. For all you ambient or Brian Eno fans out there, "Small Craft on a Milk Sea" is also fantastic. My tastes in newer music generally run outside the mainsream though.. be warned in advance!

I'm a big fan of Surrealistic Pillow as well! Smiley What I really like about Blows Against the Empire is the involvement of other "kindred spirits" like Garcia, Lesh, Crosby, Nash. . . a sister album in a way to "If I could only Remember my Name."

OK, here I go.
Warren Zevon "Excitable Boy"
John Hiatt "Bring the Family"
Stevie Ray Vaughan "Texas Flood"
Ry Cooder "Borderline"
James McMurtry "Childish Things"
Then a whole bunch more from the above named people.
After that a whole pile of other people and bands with names like Neil, Eric, Ray Wylie and on and on!

My list would have about 5 Duke Ellington's.
I'm surprised you don't have "such sweet thunder" on your list Lon.

Rap, I have hundreds of discs of Ellington. . . I just listed Indigos because it IS one of my very favorites, but I could have put many on the list!

I'm slowly buying Ellington vinyl again as well. I have three copies of Indigos: original mono, original stereo, remastered stereo. Also PRE RIAA copies of Uptown and Masterpieces by Ellington, Black Brown and Beige and all the LPs that Smithsonian put out (excellent sound for the '38 to '40 period), the Cosmic Scene in mono, and a few others.

I really love Trans-Siberian Orchestra albums "Beethoven's Last Night" and "Night Castles", both true workouts for the system...
Otherwise, anything with Alison Krauss and Union Station, or Grace Potter and the Nocturnals.

Lon,
Yep, I'm kind of predictable. Kind of like a fine watch or the fact that someone with a loud baby will sit by me at a movie.
I'm currently trying to figure out what about a song makes me like it. Gutars, of course, but something else. Maybe a certain type of bass line that moves me. A smart vocal line always helps, maybe story songs.
After pondering it for a while, I might have figured it out, I like what I like, and that I also think too much.

Donnie, I see a similarity among those top five: they are storytellers, and their songs appeal both to the emotions and the intellect, they are expressive and clever artists.

I think it's because you're a balanced individual. Smiley
