TriodeIntegrated & ToriiMkIII as HeadphoneAmps
10/12/10 at 01:46:48

Hi,

If headphone jacks were added to the Triode Integrated and to the Torii Mk III, how would they sound (compared to the Mini Torii) as amps for the Audeze LCD-2 and Beyerdynamic T1 headphones?

I would be using this amplifier ONLY with headphones (not with speakers).

Thanks!

Hi Masterlogic,

Welcome to the forums!

First of all, a headphone jack need not be installed on either amp, as it can be done with a very nice external jack that comes off the binding posts...

That said, between the 3 amps, the mini torii is the quietest, with nice black backgrounds.  It is almost too much power as it is.   I haven't tried it on the TORII MKIII or the SE34I.2 and now I no longer have the LCD-2 or the the T1 phones.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the response.

Could you tell me more - or even speculate - about how the SE34I.2 sounds as a headphone amp compared to the Mini Torii?

I have looked around the rest of the site but didn't come up with very much.

The Mini Torii has better signal to noise ratio.  On loudspeakers both the SE34I.2 and the Mini Torii would sound pretty much dead quiet at point blank range, however on headphones ANY noise is magnified.  I don't think it would be noticed while the music  is playing, but noticed or not, you'll have blacker backgrounds without it.

I am very interested in this with my SE84 'B,' since it is 'only' 1800mW/ch.  Can you point to a thread where this binding-posts-to-female-stereo-headphone-plug has been documented?
(The common ground that phones use is what is confusing me)
