I prefer my RCA 5U4 rectifier to my Valve Art 274B.  Smoother and sweeter, at least for me.

Hi drumsgreg,

I have a Sophia Electric solid plate and a mesh plate 274B.
They have a "bigger" sound than the various 5Y3 rectifiers that I have tried in the CSP2.

They have more weight, more bass and make the soundstage seem a bit larger to my ears.

Like all things tube, my preference often depends on which driver tubes I am running in the CSP2 as well as which tubes I'm running in the Select power amp.

The differences can be pretty dramatic.

It's nice to be able to dial in almost any sound you prefer by just swapping a few glass bottles .....

Best wishes,

Randy

Randy, thanks for the info on the tube, I`ll try some different 274b and see what i like, I also see you have the Hawthorne sub, do you like with the Horns?  I like the Horns allot, going to see Ed in a few weeks and listen to the cube to see if that will do the bass thing with them. He now seems to have a smaller unit called the mini cube about ready to go. Thanks, Greg

Hi Greg,

The Augie open baffle subs work VERY well with The Horns.
I took one of the Augies to the recent HornFest at Ed's place and once it was hooked up, it stayed in the system pretty much for the rest of the 'Fest by request of those involved in "serious listening" .....   Cool

It's a different sound than what you get with "traditional" subwoofers, but once you "get it" it's hard to turn back .....

It was kind of humorous to be listening to a system that consisted of a $750.00 CD player, an $800.00 pair of speakers, a $300.00 open baffle sub and a $31,000.00 (Dowdy Lama) amplifier ......

Sounded mighty good ..... not for the faint of heart.

I have not heard the new mini cube, so I can't comment on it.

Best wishes,

Randy

Randy, I have one of these subs as well, I could not get it to work well at first but now its doing very indeed, room placement and tweaking my bass amp did the trick. Your right about the sound of the bass being different from other subs, no boom boom, very clean bass. Smiley
