CCE MODIFICATION - FOR TABOO? (Read 5429 times)

Rivieraranch Seasoned Member Posts: 2145	CCE MODIFICATION - FOR TABOO? 06/04/09 at 13:07:32 The new "Christmas comes early" (CCE) modification that takes the 6P15P-EV tube in the Zens and Selects to a new level will work in the Taboo, if one uses the 6P15P-EV tube. But the Zen and Select were designed for the 6P15P-EV tube; the Taboo was designed for the 6BQ5/EL84. Sp I don't get it as to how this would improve the Taboo?

In the thread about the mod pinned in the General Audio forum, Steve had this to say:

"The mod will work on the Taboo if you use the 6P15P-EV tubes. When EL84's are used it will sound exactly the same as it does now. This is also true with the SE84C family of amps."

So. . . yeah. Only a benefit using those specific tubes.

the taboo can use the 6p15 or 6p14 (el84) tubes.

if someone really liked the sv83 in their taboo then i think the CCE mod would be a good thing.

i find the el84 tubes to be more dynamic and heavier sounding while the sv83 are airier sounding and have a little less volume or headroom.
i prefer the el84 in my amp. sometimes i swap in some sv83 though for a little change.

Jeff,

I believe if you had the mod done, you would like like what you heard, and stay with the SV83 or 6P15. If you installed the EL84 back in, there would be no change as to what you are hearing right now.

The same goes for the Torii-II, if you use KT88's or 6550 tubes, there will also be no change, unless you switch back the the EL34 tubes.
