Alternative drivers from Dayton
06/25/07 at 13:38:38

Can anyone who has built the SO Imperial recommend a 15 inch driver apart from the Dayton.

If I buy it from PartsExpress it costs $89, but shipping will put me back $149  :'(

Thanks,

Simon

Look for a low Fs
then look for a Vas around 5 cubic feet
then look for a low Qts
Ideally Fs/Qts > 100 for a horn loaded system

Alternate drivers should be chosen based on how well they work in a 4 cubic foot sealed enclosure (believe it or not).  Choose low FS as Dan said, and look for the best efficiency.  You can download a speaker program from somewhere and model different woofers in a 2nd order (sealed) box to find the best match.

Steve

ADDED NOTE:  The driver does not know it's in a horn.  The impedance plot will reflect a true sealed box.  Think of the horn as a parallel resonator.  The horn does not effect the driver, as was the point behind it's design.  This way, unlike the original Imperial, sound from other speakers in the room will not activate the horn and create unwanted bass.

How about these from Peerless.

Good price (I think, the website I found them on quotes 2 prices with a $200 difference!!). Specs in the right range.

The only doubt I have is that they are long throw woofers.  Is that a disadvantage?  Do the cones in the Imperial need to move much?

i read somewhere that lots of excursion in a front loaded horn isn't a good thing, because it can cause muddy sound.

I notice I forgot to post the link from my previous post.  Oops.

It doesn't matter, I've found a different Peerless driver that I can get my hands on.  The 830500.

Fs   = 18.1 Hz
Vas = 139.2 L  (4.92 cu Ft)
Qts  = 0.2
Sens = 90.6 dB

About spot on for what was recommended.

If I can get them, I was planning to put them in the sealed chamber that sits inside the horn and then build the rest of the cabinet.  That way I can have a bit of a listen.

I found a great driver for my old Imps, but it fits Steves requirements well.  It is the JBL136 a or h, or the pro version JBL 2231 a or h.  The fs is 16hz, the qts is .2, the sens. is 97, and the recommended enclosure is 3 to 5 cu. ft.  I am getting useable signal down to 16hz and strong signal at 20hz.  It is fairly flat all the way up to 700hz were I cross over to my Edgarhorns.

I barely found any Info about the driver. Do you know a reliable source where you can order it? What are the costs?

Kindest Regards,

Hi Wolfgang.  Both the home version and pro version are discontinued but they can be found on the used market.  I think just google them and see what you find.

Hi everyone,
The Series II Driver is the recomended driver for the Imperial S.O.
Did anyone build the Imperial S.O. with the Dayton Classics?

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=295-325 (Does anyone know a place where you can buy them without paying 90$ for shipment?)

It's got lower X-Max and goes up to 3 db louder even in the low regions. Would this one be better or at least work as good as the Series II?

Thank you,

You did not state from where you are posting. For the USA market, I have used Parts Express quite a bit and I can fully recommend them as a dealer.

Is it these, you are looking for?

Classic

Series II

(those are clicky)

Sorry, I am not familiar with the audio marketing strategies for Switzerland.

Don't give up completely though. There were at one time a few European members who may be able to help.

Hi everyone!

I have recently bought the 18" Mivoc AWX 184 and have built it in a Corner Horn. Unfortunately it doesn't produce any low bass and I am very disappointed. Is it possible to build my Mivoc into the Imperial Horn? If necessary I would also resize the Box.
Any advice would be greatly apprechiated!
Thanks a lot!

Regards,
Wolfgang
