Title: Wall mounted speakers
Post by Kristofer on 08/11/21 at 11:12:46

Hey there, I have just ordered the lovely little amp and am now wondering what loudspeakers to pair with it that would work nicely with it. The room in which I am planning to use the amp is my home office. There is a desk in front of a larger window centered in a 350cm wide wall, room is 330cm deep and 290cm high. As my sitting position will be in front of the desk, I cannot properly place loudspeakers away from the wall. So I thought wall mounted speakers would be sensible in that they are designed with a placement against the wall in mind. I have seen this work very well with beolab 6000 speakers that use the wall to generate some bass effect.

Are there any speakers out there you would recommend? Or any hints on how to design and build them myself?

Or would it be better to use really small monitor speakers? If so, would I need to add an additional woofer for lower frequencies?

Would something like the Trapezium be too large for your desktop?

Ported speakers can have their ports stuffed to reduce bass, this may help balance out the increased bass due to wall mounting.

I guess I could fit those speakers, but would they create the same sound/base as larger speakers could?

Smaller speakers will always be a compromise. I would avoid all rear ported speakers if they need to be close to a wall.

All systems have compromises, you have already placed constraints on your system.
I don't know what all of your expectations are or what will ultimately be satisfying to you. Something that I'm happy with may not please you at all.

Omega is another option and often used for nearfield listening.
The owner Louis will customize them for specific needs like front or down firing ports.

I''m thinking the Tiny Radials would be your ticket to bliss. Those and maybe a discreetly placed subwoofer.
If I recall correctly, Mr. Deckert has written that the sound quality from those speakers rival some of the highest end rigs he's heard, and I imagine they would fit nicely on your desk. And image like champs. And look good too!

Thank you all!

So wall mounted speakers are not a favourable option here?

Correct speaker placement is often overlooked. If the best possible sound quality is priority 1, throwing a pair of speakers on the wall and hoping for the best will never suffice.

If I had no choice but to use wall mounted speakers (not including in this -speakers designed to allow near wall placement), I would buy a $50 chip amp.

I assume if someone is buying a $1,000 set 2 watt tube amp they want to take advantage of what it has to offer, so speaker placement is important.

IMO, YMMV, etc. :)

Okido, then properly placed small speakers I guess :)

Looking at the Betsy Open Baffle Design.... at the room described, would that be sufficient bass?

Kristofer,

If you need speakers to be close to the wall behind, then open baffle speakers are not the way to go. You need a minimum of 2’ of space between them and the wall behind.

Also, open baffles need to be on the floor. It sounds to me like you were in need of a desktop type placement?

Yes I guess I have to wait with my open Baffle dreams for speakers in another room :/

So, happy to hear any recommendations for desktop speakers!

This would be my choice for desktop speakers:

Yep digging into this now and will search that very long thread here for good sub pairings :)

These sell as fast as they appear on the website, so you’ll have to check frequently and act fast.  8-)

Dear forum,

so going with the tiny radials and wanting to add a sub, I keep wondering: my source will be a dragonfly red USB DAC. I could plug a Y-cable in there, one end going into the se84ufo and one into an active sub. Would that be better than going into a sub in parallel to the TRs after the UFO?

You would need a subwoofer with speaker level inputs or (and) stereo L & R rca inputs.
Some prefer speaker level, some prefer line (rca) level, some don't have a preference.
Avoid subwoofers with a mono rca input and no speaker level inputs unless you run a pair (doesn't seem likely in your desktop setup).

Yep, thought about a Klipsch R-10SW which has stereo RCA input.

How will you control the volume of the subwoofer?
Will you have a master volume control before both amplifiers?

Yes the master volume control is on the computer that has the USB DAC plugged in.

I believe this has been recommended somewhere in this forum for desktop speakers: Dayton Audio
