I stopped listening when he mentioned the price.

Just kidding, it is an interesting story, but as a practical matter how many different masterings of Kind of Blue or Blue Train does an audiophile need?

If you duplicate that tape on a high dollar digital recorder and play it back on a good DAC you will have captured the vast majority of it at a fraction of the cost.  Too bad there aren't any high res downloads out there that are actually non-limited tape dupes because those would sound very different from what we're streaming.

There is this one:

It sounds fantastic compared to my Sony DSD download, which sounds pretty good in its own right.

You can save a significant amount of money by duplicating that cassette using an expensive digital recorder and playing it back using a high-quality digital audio converter (DAC). This will allow you to record the vast bulk of it.  Unfortunately, there do not appear to be any high-resolution downloads that are genuinely non-limited tape dupes because those would sound significantly differently than what we are streaming.
