Title: Room not recognizing Schiit Dac
Post by Dominick on 05/02/23 at 12:43:14

Everyone,

Been running Roon 1.8 from my laptop for the past year with zero issues.  Roon was interfaced with a Raspberry Pi 3B+ with Ropiee installed.  Roon would recognize my Schiit Bifrost Dac and it would show up on my laptop as well on my iPhone. ***Note….I can’t run Roon’s newest version due to the hardware limitations of my laptop.

Out of nowhere my Schiit Dac is not showing up on either of my devices…only my Chromecast devices.   Keep in mind I have not done any updates on my Dac’s firmware nor have I done any Roon updates.   I guess the first thing I can do is obtain and install a new copy Ropiee.  Other than that…. Any thoughts?

Dom,

Sorry to hear about your situation. If you're on FB, consider joining and posting your issue on the Roon User group. Folks are extremely helpful solving hiccups and you'll get a much faster response then Roon tech support.

Also, given the regular updates made to Roon software you may want to consider an upgrade in your core computer. There are a lot of good deals on fast, powerful laptops these days. Good luck.

Roger,

Thanks for the info…I’ll have to give Facebook a try.  Yes… my laptop is an old Asus with a Core I3 chip…not really what I should be running…but it works.  I actually upgraded the HD to a solid state drive as a minimum requirement prior to installing Roon.  Yeah I may have to obtain a new laptop and start a new core… which is what I was trying to avoid but ultimately know that’s inevitable at some point.

I have to say there is a huge difference when running Roon through the USB input on my Dac vs optical.  So need to get this resolved. I’m sure double smoked BBQ cable I got from you is a contributing factor!

I hate to say it, but I agree you probably need a new computer and the latest Roon.

P.S. I you haven't done it already you can try powering down the laptop, DAC and everything in between and then powering it back on. Roon might have a preferred order for doing it. That might get you back up, but probably the long term solution is running the current software.

Second what CAJames said, power everything down. I run Roon 1.8 on a Mac mini, USB to Bifrost and get the same problem from time to time. Seems if Roon is running and you unplug the usb it goes wonky. Other than that issue, I have no issues with 1.8. I wonder if something on the laptop, perhaps when it sleeps, shuts the USB off and doesn’t wake it gracefully?

CAJAMES….yes I’ve powered everything down and backup multiple times and I’m still having the same issue.

Sean… I’ve changed the sequence order of what gets powered up first, but still no change.  I’ve never physically unplugged the USB but only used the selector button to change inputs.  I read about disabling antivirus software…I’ve tried that with no luck.

I’m going to reboot my computer and make sure that there are no updates that need to be performed, and then I’ll try and run a new copy of Ropiee.  My dad has a newer laptop he is not using….so it looks like that’s going to be next.
