Title: 6v6 to el84 adapter?
Post by charles hidalgo on 03/23/23 at 07:50:36

Has anyone used an adapter in the mini torii? I see them
For sale at the usual places but I have never tried them.

Thank you

Interesting

I just got a convertor that goes from 5670 to 6922 for my MHDT Stockhom DAC and it did make the sound stage better and the bass a bit stronger.

I do like tube rolling so this is intriguing

I've never heard these, don't have a mini torii, and in general my policy is to never discourage people from rolling tubes. But my experience is using a miniature 9 pin tube (like an EL84) instead of an octal tube (like a 6V6) is (almost) always a step down. Going the other way is (usually) a step up. 9 pin tubes exist because they were cheaper, not better, than the octal tubes they replaced. But of course one never knows for sure unless one tries. JMO/FWIW and all that.

Hey grinnell that adapter might go well for that Stockholm (Syndrome) DAC but I think an EL84 would sound squeaky in the Mini Torii circuit.

Riverranch

Yea i agree the 6V6 tube carries its weight but always curious :)

I should be clear and I could see how I was not. The adapter was an example and I don't literally want to adapt this amp to an el84 tube. In fact I do not. Just curious about any possible positive findings in adapters. I have , adapters that have arrived for many options like 807 and 6bg6. The amp already has plenty of options already of course but an adapter has  worked well for me in the past with the smaller 9 pins to octal so as many I'm curious.

Hidalgo,

How do you like the 807 tubes?  Temped to try them but the extra wires and caps makes me worry about getting a shock ( my wife especially wories about that)

I have a pair of Valve Art 350B that I thought sounded a bit thin.  Using 1940's Brimar 6v6g ST and much fuller sound

Charlie:

What did you hide? J/k. The 807s went into my Mini and they ain’t coming out. They are that good.

Grinnell:

Have no anode cap fear. Just don’t remove the cap from the anode while the amp is turned on. You should try the 807s as well.

I haven't used 807 adapters, but I've had good luck with ebay adapters from xulingmrs. I can't say that about other ebay sellers.

The adapters I use have all been from there as well.

The nicest tube lineup to my ears after a few days of long listening and several tube tries.

The 807s sound fantastic in the amp. If you don't believe this, just place a 6V6 on one side and perform an A/B comparison.

That's why they ended up there. In the last week I have tried around 10 different power tubes and a few of the 12XX7 types. This has been a spooky holographic combo with the 807's and some choice 12at7's. Incredible. Now I need to get rid of the left channel hum it arrived with. I could live with this just fine.

Charlie:

I bought my Mini used in 2019. It was the last of the white top production from 2012. I sent it to the factory to install UFO transformers and anniversary modifications. It sounded great when it returned to me. Recently I sent it to Decware again; this time for a capacitor upgrade, volume pot cleaning/repair and to tune the headphone jack for my Senns. Needless to say this time it came back sounding even better than it had before.

You should consider sending yours to be updated. I have not tried the 12AT7 as an input but I might.

It is worth it to me to purse a ufo upgrade I believe. I  Need to send it in anyway as it arrives with a left channel hum.

807's have been the choice so far for me. I just dropped in a pair of 30's Ken Rad/Crosley 6K6G's. Man oh man really nice!

I tried some 6Ks one time; not the old G type, but newer straight bottles. I don't recall it being that much better than what I had been running. But if it sounds great to you that is what counts.

You could go after the wood base with some restorer with color in it. They sell it for around $10 at the hardware store.

You're welcome Charlie. Those speaker wires look like dual anacondas.
