Title: Wanted 6+ watts Decware
Post by twilightround on 03/02/23 at 20:32:17

I have new very efficient speakers on order for a new system for my retirement.  I hope to complete it with Decware amp, preamp, or integrated.  At this point in my life time is more important than price.  If you are planning to replace some or all of your Decware components, please let me know.  I hope to find 6 watts or more amplification.

Congrats on your retirement!
Curious - what speakers did you order?

I must say that retirement is nice - probably should have done it at 25.  The speakers I have on order are Omega super alnico monitors (for semi-nearfield listening) and two Omega active subs (to hook up in stereo).  The Omegas are supposed to do well with 6 watts or somewhat more.  I am considering ZMA at 40 watts, which is more than watts and dollars than absolutely necessary, but sure looks like it would be nice to listen to.  I am in no position to audition stuff, so I need to find something with good resale value if it turns out to be not what I want.  But my hope is to put the system together once and then just enjoy the music.

The ZMA should easily meet your needs.  There have been a few used one appearing here in the past six months. No way am I selling mine.

I must say that our Rachael (6W+-) drives our Omega perfectly...so I will not be able to help you by sell it anytime soon. Keep us posted on your progress and what you end up with. Happy listening.

I had a Rachel and ZMA at the same time.  after much deliberation i sold Rachel.  My speakers are fine with 2W so it wasn't a power issue.   The power supply in the ZMA is special.

Twighlight,
I’ve heard those Omegas are very nice.

However, in a nearfield setup, with around 94 db sensitivity, and the low-end farmed out to active subs, honestly I think you could even go with one of the 2-watt Decware amps if you came across one for sale.

First, I am grateful for all the responses I have gotten. With all the bad on the internet, it’s nice to see how helpful it can be with good people using it in a good way.  Second, I’m beginning to think that the question is not how few watts is too few, but how many is too many.  Will an amp working at, say, 2% of its capacity lose something compared to when it is at 20%?  Would this vary according to the way it is working (e.g., class A, A/B, D)?

While I cannot directly answer your question, another aspect to consider is what your fineness might be.

Twighlight, curious - when will your speakers be shipped?

Louis says I should have them by April.

What I meant to say was:

While I cannot directly answer your question, another aspect to consider is what your future needs might be.  Will you always have high efficiency speakers? My Focal Sopra 2's require all of the ZMA's 40W.

I guess there is always that possibility.  However, I am pretty old (80) and I think the speakers will probably last as long as I do. And, if I did decide to replace them with less efficient ones, it seems I could also replace the 6 watt Decware without losing much money.  I hope that makes sense.
