Ordered a pair, and I'm going to cut some wood; Black Walnut, for the baffles. My question:

!. big advantage to rear mounted with a round over vs front mounted?

Hi Steve.

How thick are you going to make them? Make them 1.5” if you can.

Front mount vs rear mount has been discussed several times here. The general consensus was that there was no difference.

However, if you do mount it from the front, a bevel on the back edge will smooth the sound out a bit. This has been discussed here several times also. So it isn’t just for aesthetics - it is also functional.

Thanks Geno! I have 1 1/2" Butcher block, and 1" Black Walnut, so I'll try both.

I do like to mount the drivers from the rear. I think it makes the speaker look better. It seems your baffles should be thick enough to do this.

Hey Deuce,

Looks like you perhaps used the round from cutting the speaker hole for the base ?
I've been puzzling over how to make use of the leftover wood - that is just too simple!

Yes, I did. I like to use as much of the wood as possible and the cutout for the 15" is the perfect size for the base. I also cut a sliver off so the round was flat to mount to the front panel and then cut that in half for supports between the base and the front panel.

Great idea there with the sliver Deuce . . .

I am planning on the Silver 10 with Randy's barrel shape, so I'm not sure a 10 inch cutout would be big enough - we'll see.

Hi Deuce,
I'm a hobby woodworker and new to the forum, building my first Open Baffles. I'm waiting on my order for a SE84UFO25, and I want my F-15s well broken in before it arrives. I also like the idea of using the cutouts as stands. My question is, how did you attach the cutouts to the Baffles?

Not sure that I can fully address your question, because mine are still kind of in the larval stage, using a 3x plywood barrel shaped mock up with stood up 2x4 construction lumber as a base for mass and stability.

I front mounted mine, but one thing I noticed right away was some unwanted reflections from the baffle.

As a leather hobbyist, I had some extra leather laying around and I cut a four inch border of leather in the barrel shape to place around my drivers as a way to inhibit the panel reflections.
I know a lot of people use that closed cell foam for this, but I would have had to order some and wait.

I have used leather in the past to do the same thing as foam padding around drivers to soften panel reflections and also inside compression drivers when you can no longer attain the proper factory prescribed foam to rebuild vintage compression drivers.

I don't have a way to take it off and put it back on and make a judgement. I only have the memory of how it reflected without the leather.
I'm keeping the leather in place for diminishing the panel reflections from the front mounted F15 drivers for now.

I have a feeling that if you rear mount them you will have a similar issue, which few have talked about, but it will be a bit different in scale, I'm sure.
Rear mounting the drivers and dramatically rounding over the front escape for the driver would certainly lessen or diminish the front panel reflections by some degree.

Rbt,
I used biscuits and glue. The glue I use is Titebond 3. That stuff holds pretty good.
There are a few different things you can use to not see the screws from the front. Biscuits, dowls, Festool dominoes (this one is a little expensive) or the Kreg screw jig. The sliver I cut in half I just glued in place using weight to hold it down until the glue dried. For most of these you will need a tool to make it easy. Using dowls you can probably create your own jig to drill them accurately.

Thank you for the info. I will more than likely use dowels. I looked into the Festool dominoes before; unless one is a cabinet maker, it is really expensive.

Same Old DD
As I'm a beginner at making speakers, I'm not sure where you have mounted the leather on the baffle. As I'm at the beginning of the construction stage, your heads-up would be greatly appreciated. Maybe a snapshot. It is so great to find this DYI part of the form.
