Title: Parts Express C Sharp
Post by EdwardT on 08/30/22 at 19:38:03

I have a friend with moderate PTSD (after serving in Iraq) and he's finally bought and moved into a house all his own. Not that his family home wasn’t his but this one is unique to him and it’s a good thing. As a housewarming gift I’m building a pair of self powered Bluetooth capable speakers for his desktop, unless he sees this it will be a surprise. First up, glue and clamps:

More glue, more clamping

And some soldering:

Glue's dry, holes drilled and screws run in, now for some heat lock glue, veneer and a hot iron.

Next step is deciding on the finish.

Thanks for the Tried and True shout out, looks like a nice product but it’s not anywhere close to here for purchase. Here's the first coat of stain, most likely followed by a few coats of spray can clear shellac that will be followed by Zinsser's yellowed shellac to give a bit of patina.

I do like shellac!

I second the idea of helping someone in a way that you are able.  Looks to be good work too. I am curious about the drivers you will be using. Bet you have photos of them coming up. Also, always neat to know the specs. Maybe I missed them in one of your previous posts.

You took $200 speakers and made $600 speakers out of them!

I am happy that you are able to do this for your friend.

Paying forward is admirable.

4Krow: Dayton Audio ND25FW-4 1" Soft Dome Neodymium Tweeter with Waveguide
Dayton Audio DSA135-8 5" Designer Series Aluminum Cone Woofer
Lepai LP40PA 40W Mini Plate Amplifier and Control Panel with Bluetooth and a 1/8” aux input.
I’m guessing they will surpass his plastic Logitech speakers and elevate his entertainment value. Lots of images hidden in the burl, too, so that’s kinda fun.

It’s difficult for me to wrap my head around an amp that can be this small, produce 20+20 watts and have Bluetooth connectivity.

I made a mistake by not applying experience from before. The tweeter sits too deep once the layer of veneer is applied.

My solution is to add veneer under the tweeter on the mounting recess. I’ve done this on all of the cnc flat packs I’ve built and I just forgot to repeat my behavior.

I got lucky when the burl did not split.

My work has flaws and the burl finds ways to humble you. He has a scad of antique furniture so they'll fit in fine over at his house and even better, they have a room filling sound that’s very listenable and not fatiguing.
